A position is available for a graduate student to pursue studies leading to the doctorate (Ph.D.) in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University. Full financial aid is provided that includes tuition, fees, and a calendar year stipend for the duration of studies.
The research is in the field of droplet combustion. The fuels we desire to study include transportation fuels (gasoline, diesel, jet fuel) and their blends with other fuels, as well as fuels derived from various bio-feedstocks (i.e., algae). This problem is important for improving the fuel efficiency of combustion engines.
A unique facility exists at Cornell that creates conditions whereby droplets can burn without the influence of convection (buoyancy or forced flow) to promote spherical symmetry, which is ideal for modeling.
We wish to attract a student with interests in doing experimental research. Prior experience need not be in the field of combustion, and students with backgrounds in other fields (e.g., nanotechnology) and degrees from other departments (e.g., chemical engineering) have also been very successful doing research on this problem.
