1 CMU(MSCF)
I graduated from the MSCF program in Dec 2013 from the Pittsburgh program. I had an undergrad degree in Electrical Engg from IIT Madras and did work at Morgan Stanley, India for 3 years. I had a very tough decision to make between the top MBA schools in India and the MSCF program. In hindsight I feel, it was the best decision of my life.

The 16 months I spent in Pittsburgh were amazing with a number of memorable moments to relish for the rest of my life. I made great friends, endured a lot of stress, had a a lot of fun and most importantly learnt a lot. In all, the program exceeded all expectations I had when I walked in on the first day. . visit 1point3acres.com for more.

I totally agree with all the reviews here about how friendly everyone around is. CMU has undoubtedly the best career services who are willing to go the extra mile, to listen to you and to understand your specific career objectives. I did receive a lot of help with my career search from them, second years and the broad Alumni network that CMU has built over the past decade.

The education here is top class. Faculty here are very friendly and are willing to help you if you are struggling in a particular area/subject. The help you get from the student services is amazing too. They listen to every complaint you can possibly make and take prompt action. Also, not to mention the amount of work that goes behind the scenes to organise social events and to make every moment of the MSCF journey fun and memorable.

The homework is very tedious and do expect to be spending 6-10 hrs (depending on your background) everyday on the homework. It does get a little out of hand sometimes with all the recruiting and networking one has to do to get a great job in Finance. Personally, I felt I was learning twice as much doing the homework. In most of the cases it was a great value add to the amazing lectures we have.

To add to all this, the program is housed inside the Tepper School of Business. There are a lot of opportunities to interact with the more experienced MBA class, take up leadership positions in clubs and develop your soft skills. One can develop an all round personality which is very crucial for a successful career..鐣欏璁哄潧-涓浜-涓夊垎鍦

The only drawback:. visit 1point3acres.com for more.
There is a lot to be learnt and experienced in the MSCF program. But there is very little time at hand. The program being only 16 months adds to additional pressure finding a job in your last semester and also doing the advanced course work. This has in the past brought a lot of criticism and negative reviews to this program. But, at the end of the day, you would feel a sense of achievement having been through this tough patch. Year on year many students have done it in the toughest of times and I don't see a reason why it can't be done. On the bright side, you will be prepped up for the tough careers you will be getting into.

Things happen at a very fast pace in the MSCF program. It is so easy to get lost, not knowing what to do and just struggle to catch up with the homework. You have to be on your toes every single day for 3 semesters. If you think spending $100K on a program and then expect a pay of $100K at the end of 16 months without effort, think again. Such arbitrages don't exist in this world especially in Finance. . 鐗涗汉浜戦泦,涓浜╀笁鍒嗗湴

Over a period of time, CMU MSCF program has evolved into a great ecosystem where you get rewarded for all the efforts you put in as a student. The best way to make full use of the program, is to do your background work: understand the job market, identify your key skills, set realistic career goals and make full use of all the resources at CMU to achieve your dream.

I did just that and now I am very proud of being an MSCF alum.

CMU不愧是金工老大,感觉各方面都很不错,给自己攒人品希望能申到- -

Tell us about the quality of teaching
The quality of teaching was good, as professors have practical experience in finance. Teaching assistants are helpful for homework assignments.

Materials used in the program
Primarily professor lecture notes. Textbooks used mainly as reference, or recommended reading, rarely required.

Programming component of the program
Matlab, Excel VBA, C++, S-Plus, Java. A good amount of programming is done- about 1/2 of assigned problems.

Projects.鏈枃鍘熷垱鑷1point3acres璁哄潧
In the Fall Semester only individual homeworks. Group and individual projects on various topics are done in the Spring.

Career service
Mainly the Center for Career Education at Columbia, also msfE Resume Book, some positions through the department.

Can you comment on the social interaction between students of different ethnics, nationalities in the program?.1point3acres缃
Good social interaction between different ethnical groups and nationalities. Of course, people having the same mother language would prefer communicating more in it to people from their countries rather than in English.

What do you like about the program?
Prestigious academic institution, very good faculty.

Why did you choose this program (over others, if applicable)?

I liked the location the best. Smaller class size compared to Columbia MFE, and the professors were willing to answer questions while I was already accepted but still considering where to go.

What do you think is unique about this program?

Compared to schools outside of NYC, having professors who are practitioners. Compared to other schools in NYC, superior location..鏈枃鍘熷垱鑷1point3acres璁哄潧

Tell us about...

Quality of teaching:

The professors were very knowledgeable, but it wasn't always the most well organized. Sometimes the material was too advanced or too fast paced for the students to properly learn the topic before moving on to the next subject. However, I would say the program did a good job covering the essential knowledge needed to do well in interviews and eventually in the industry.
. 1point3acres.com/bbs
Programming component of the program:

Not much OOP outside of a class in the first semester. Quite a bit of exposure to Matlab, which is good. However we were taught Java instead of C++ which was a bit unfortunate. Even though we learn the core programming concepts, it seems like quants in the industry prefer C++. Most of the assignments and projects are programming based, so students will get plenty of practice.

Career service:

Needs serious improvement. The career workshops done during the first semester were marginally helpful, but should be common knowledge for any serious candidate looking for a finance job. Very few employer presentations, unless students signed up for themselves on company websites. Not many networking opportunities set up by the program, the initiative is placed solely on the student. There were several internship and job postings forwarded to the full time students by the program however, which was nice.
鏉ユ簮涓浜.涓夊垎鍦拌鍧.
What is your current job status? What are you looking for?

Buy-side portfolio management. To be honest I didn't really want to be a quant, and after my quant oriented internship I realized I would much rather be market facing and a part of the investment decisions. These roles are usually reserved for undergrads and MBAs so I was quite happy landing a role here coming out of a quant program. The obvious long term goal: portfolio manager.

Columbia MAFN, LSE Financial Mathematics. 7-months post-graduation I believe I made the correct choice.

Why did you choose this program (over others, if applicable)?
Three semester structure gives a big advantage to international students that have no network to rely on. My internship turned into a full-time offer and given the current environment that makes all the difference especially for non-residents. Cornell/Columbia vs. LSE I think is a clear choice with no need to explain.

.鐣欏璁哄潧-涓浜-涓夊垎鍦Clean and inexpensive. Easy communication with both administration and the program directors (both in Ithaca and CFEM). Quick and honest replies.

Does this program offer refresher courses for incoming students? How useful was it?
I believe these are optional. I certainly took no refresher courses but heard some students did in the 4-6 weeks prior the start.

Tell us about the courses selection in this program. Any special courses you like?
Selection is pretty standard to any MFE program. Students have decent choice of electives. Cornell charges fixed amount and not per credit; given that you have the interest you will have all the means to take additional classes. Third semester is all practitioner's classes. I particularly enjoyed the two Stochastic calc classes. Johannes Wissel was teaching at the time and he gave a lot of insight coupled with instructive set of homework assignments. Other than that Janossi's Credit Risk, Topaloglu/Frazier Monte Carlo and Renegar's Optimization Modelling classes were great. Ruppert's Statistics for FE is something I use in my job on daily basis. On the soft side there are good classes on fixed income - Jarrow and MBS - Averbukh. Stoikov gives a solid introduction to market microstructure.

Tell us about the quality of teaching
Outstanding. Only exception were the two of the three business school Professors. Jarrow was great so it is really the other two.

Materials used in the program

A lot of notes packages written for the classes that use various sources.

Stochastic Calc - Shreve + notes
Credit Risk - notes + Lando
Monte Carlo - notes + Glasserman
Stats - Ruppert
Fixed Income - Jarrow, Tuckman, Hayre + notes.鏈枃鍘熷垱鑷1point3acres璁哄潧
PM - Swensen + notes
CF - Brandimarte + notes. 1point 3acres 璁哄潧
Optimization - Tutuncu + notes

Programming component of the program
A lot of R (Stats); some Matlab (CF and Optimization) and C++ (Monte Carlo, Credit Risk). I personally think that VBA is something that people should know by that stage and it is easy enough to not waste class time on.

Projects
Big group project (6 students) in the third semester sponsored by a large financial company on the street. I worked on market microstructure. Smaller project all the time.. 鐗涗汉浜戦泦,涓浜╀笁鍒嗗湴

Career service
Cornell's general career services. every single company would visit the campus and come screen on campus. The program director acts as dedicated career services as well.

Can you comment on the social interaction between students of different ethnics, nationalities in the program?
That is really the elephant in the room. 30% of my class was indeed very international with a good mix of all continents. The 70%, however, was perfectly homogeneous forming their own group and speaking their own language; that comes at cost for themselves and unfortunately the whole class/program.

What do you like about the program?.鐣欏璁哄潧-涓浜-涓夊垎鍦
Very solid curriculum offering both technical and fundamental classes. Outstanding teaching. Strong alumni network all over the street. Program has been around for close to 20 years and graduates are to be found on every level. Class size is very appropriate and kept under a certain threshold.

What DON’T you like about the program?
Composition of the class should be more balanced or the majority of students should be incentivized to speak English

Suggestions for the program to make it better
Pretty much covered. I think that the application process now includes a mandatory phone interview (it was only done in certain cases before) which is a step in the right direction. The program is evolving while keeping the class number tight, a very positive trend.. 1point 3acres 璁哄潧

What are your current job status? What are you looking for?
Analyst for one of the biggest/strongest sell-side IBs on the street.

Other comments
MFE does not guarantee placement. Students get exposure that they would not get anywhere else and it really comes down to individual effort; that is valid for any MFE and not particular to Cornell. Soft-skills are extremely important. All the above is my take and impression regarding Cornell's program and it might be considerably different from my classmates'. Feel free to PM me and I can put you in contact with other graduates that may give you a differing opinion.

5 UCLA
My Experience:
The reason why I am writing this review is because the UCLA MFE has been underplayed by most applicants as a weak/fledgling program and to increase awareness amongst new applicants about the UCLA MFE and my experience. As a current student in the UCLA MFE 2014 batch, I can say my experience has been absolutely fantastic. Having an undergrad in engineering and an MBA in finance coupled with experience as a programmer, prop trader and a research analyst, I joined the program with a thirst to learn advanced Math & Stats, build and implement models in Finance and move into the buy-side of the financial industry. The information and knowledge imparted in the course was much more than what I had expected and am very satisfied.

About the program:
Since the program spans for only 14 months, it can be extremely demanding, but the knowledge gained in those 14 months is enormous. Students gain a high level of proficiency in subjects like Econometrics, Stochastic Calculus and Computational methods in Finance along with enhanced programming skills in MATLAB, R and SAS.

Job placement:
The career management cell does an excellent job reaching out to companies and everyone has been very successful in securing an internship in my batch. I can't speak about full time jobs, since I am yet to graduate. But looking at the previous batch, I am quite confident that our batch will be well placed. You should also keep in mind that the career management can get you an interview, not a job! It is up to the candidate to impress and convince potential employers of his/her skills and knowledge.-google 1point3acres

Pros & Cons:
Although, UCLA covers all areas in quantitative finance, the course material caters more towards careers in Asset Management and Hedge funds. If you are looking for an HFT or intense C++ programming or a pure Math finance course then this is not for you. The UCLA MFE is a fine balance achieved by combining the necessary applied Math, Stat and Programming to the field of Finance.
. 鍥磋鎴戜滑@1point 3 acres

Best taught subjects:
1) Econometrics by Prof. Hanno Lustig: Almost parallel to the PhD level 1 class taught by Prof. Cochrane at Chicago Booth.
2) Fixed Income by Prof. Francis Longstaff: Taught by the man himself. Co-inventor of the LSM method used to price path dependent options which is used by most option pricing models and many more path-breaking achievements.
3) Quantitative Assent Management by Prof. Jason Hsu: CIO of Research Affiliates, which manages more than $169 Billion. What works and what does not from the practical standpoint.
4) Computational Methods in Finance by Prof. Levon Goukasian: Specialist in Portfolio Optimization. After this class you can price almost any derivative security by solving or implementing SDEs and PDEs

My advice to new applicants:
1) Know what you want: It is very important to understand why you want the MFE and what career track you wish to pursue after the MFE. If its Investment Banking associate or corporate finance or general jobs in finance, get an MBA!
2) Be open minded:- A trader at an I-bank is no longer the ideal job! Even if you believe it is, not everyone can get it. Look at other job profiles, the industry is booming with quant jobs in Risk Management and analytics.
3) Get a CFA level 1 if you don't have experience in finance. The exam will help you answer the most important question, are you really passionate about finance?
