Research Assistantship Opening # 1:

Damage Detection from Operational Wind Turbine Blades Preferred Start Date: Spring 2017 (January 2017 or June 2017) Starting Level: PhD/MS

The researcher in this position will develop and test advanced signal processing algorithms for operational damage detection and identification from operational full scale wind turbines. The researcher will design the online structural health monitoring system, procure the right components, put the system together and test it on full-scale wind turbine blades. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in condition monitoring system design, wireless data transmission, structural health monitoring, algorithm development and wind turbine hardware procurement and testing. Background/experience in signal processing, structural health monitoring and machine learning algorithm development is preferred. Multibody Dynamics Modeling of Automotive Transmissions Preferred Start Date: Spring 2017 (January 2017 or June 2017) Starting Level: PhD/MS

The researcher in this position will develop and utilize analytical and computational tools for vibration/noise modeling and suppression from automotive manual and automatic transmissions. This researcher will develop a dynamic model for a tuned-mass vibration absorber to reduce torsional vibrations from vehicle transmissions. Experience with multibody dynamics, and  Matlab programming language is essential for this position. Experience with computer programming using one or more of the compiled languages (Visual Basic, Fortran, C, C++,  other) is preferred. Computational Aero-Acoustics (CAA) for Structural Health Monitoring Preferred Start Date: Spring 2017 (January 2017 or June 2017) Starting Level: PhD/MS

The researcher in this position will develop and use computational aero-acoustics simulation tools to assess wind turbine blade damage using acoustic measurements/predictions. The computational tools will also be used to optimize the damage detection. Coupled fluid-acoustic (e.g.: CFD/computational aero + SNGR + acoustic propagation) and/or high-fidelity predictive tools (direct CAA) for aero-acoustics prediction will be considered/developed/used in this research. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in scientific computing, aerodynamics and/or aero-acoustics. Background/experience in computer programming using compiled languages (Fortran, C, C++, other) and numerical methods for PDEs (boundary/finite element, finite difference and/or finite volume) and/or prior experience using CFD/CAA tools is strongly preferred. Digital Signal and Image Processing for Damage/Impact Detection using Novel Sensors

Preferred Start Date: Fall 2017 (September 2017)

The researcher in this position will develop advanced signal and image processing algorithms for various applications including operational impact and damage detection from dynamic structures as well as identification of the dropwise condensation dynamics. This researcher will procure and test state-of-the-art piezoelectric sensors for impact detection and analyze measured  condensation data. The ideal candidate will have a strong background and interest in time- frequency domain signal and image processing techniques, data compression and storage as well as wireless data transmission. Experience with Matlab and/or C (or similar) programming languages will be instrumental. Machine learning algorithm development will also be a part of this project.
