Week 1: Introduction to image and video processing (January 20, Quiz deadline 2 weeks later)

Learning objective(s):
Learn what is image and video processing. Learn the very basic concepts of human perception needed for understanding image processing. Learn simple tools in signal processing needed to understand following units.

week1 主要是介绍什么是digital image processing,用digital image processing可以做哪些事情以及一些基础知识点。

1. 课程论坛里有人问作业什么时候due(这门课的作业都是两周之后due,并且可以尝试1000次);

2. 课程论坛里抱怨说作业没有立即反馈(作业做完之后,只会显示你的分数,不会显示哪道题做错了),然后老师就修改了设置,可以选择给出立即反馈,这样学生好针对知识点;

3. 课程论坛里有的抱怨说有些作业老师没讲到;

针对这些问题以及自身学习经验,我在论坛里发了以下观点:

The following are the suggestions based on my experience(I am novice in the area of digital image processing), more than happy to hear about yours:

1. Know the rules.

How to know the course rules?
Explore the left menu of the this homepage, you will learn important information, such as what are the topics the course will cover, what is the grading policy and what is the due date etc.

How to know the general things about Coursera?
Explore the Coursera Help

I still remember one thing that I took a class at school. The syllabus said you should use 8.5*11 paper to do your homework, those who didn't following this simple rule, their homework will not be grade. The teacher did exactly what the syllabus says.

Those thing well worth your time and also save others.

2. Study beyond the course videos.

Due to the limitation of time, some important content not cover or not deep in the videos. To me, those videos serve as a guide, a stimulus to let you learn more if you want.

I want to introduce some important resources(some have been introduced, but I want to address here):

ImageProcessingPlace website : this website introduces the two fundamental books about digital image processing: one is Digital Image Processing, 3rd edition, professor follows this book half of the class. So, if you want to learn more, after watching the videos, you can look into this book. The other is Digital Image Processing Using MATLAB, 2nd edition(Download available here, which shared by someone on the facebook study group), which focus on using Matlab to implement the theory provided in the Digital Image Processing, 3rd edition. Also, this website give some excellent helpful Tutorials.

Matlab blog: the host is Steve Eddins. Steve Eddins is a software development manager in the MATLAB and image processing areas at MathWorks. Steve coauthored Digital Image Processing Using MATLAB. He writes here about image processing concepts, algorithm implementations, and MATLAB.

Image and Multidimensional Signal Processing: this online material also use the book Digital Image Processing, 3rd edition as the textbook. The Lectures section contains pdf lecture and recorded videos, which is a great supplement material for our online course. That online material has some overlap with ours, but it also contains other important knowledge you can learn. Hope you enjoy this!

I think the above material will give you comprehensive fundamental knowledge about digital image processing.

3. How to post

    ask after searching, someone maybe already ask the same question; write to others as you would like them to write to you


4. Privacy
   
    Online learning sometimes will expose your privacy, you have to be careful when you join the Facebook study group and other social media.
   
If we can reach the above 'agreement', I think we can build a more efficient online learning community and discuss more deep about digital image processing. So, this is a multiple win situation.

Week 2: Image and video compression (January 27, Quiz deadline 2 weeks later)
Learning objectives:

JPEG and MPEG are the most successful algorithms in the area, widely used by everybody in a daily basis, and the goal of this unit is to understand how they work. Also to understand why these techniques are important and why they are enabling technologies. Also will describe what is done in the Mars expedition.

Assessment(s):  Multiple choice questions. optional programming exercise.

Week 3: Spatial processing (February 3, Quiz deadline 2 weeks later)
Learning objectives:

Some of the most basic tools in image processing, like median filtering and histogram equalization, are still among the most powerful. We will describe these and provide a modern interpretation of these basic tools. Students will then become familiar with simple and still popular approaches. We will also include non-local means, a more modern technique that still uses classical tools.

Assessment(s): Multiple choice questions. Optional programming exercise.

week 4 : Image restoration (February 10, Quiz deadline 2 weeks later)
Learning objectives:

The goal of this unit is to complement Unit 3 by adding prior information about the sources of degradation. Students will learn that if we know about the degradation process, we can do better. The objective of this unit is to complete the training with basic and powerful classical tools.

Assessment(s): Multiple choice questions. Optional programming exercise.

Week 5: Image segmentation (February 17, Quiz deadline 2 weeks later)
Learning objectives:

Not all parts of the image are the same, and students will learn the basic techniques to partition an image, from simple threshold to more advanced graph cuts and active contours. This is the first unit where student will learn about image analysis and image interpretation, and will learn why this is important, e.g., in medical imaging and object recognition.

Assessment(s): Multiple choice questions. Optional programming exercise.

Week 6: Geometric PDEs (February 24, Quiz deadline 2 weeks later)
Learning objectives:

This is the first “advanced” unit and smoothly follows from the previous one. Students will learn very modern tools, widely used today, and will contrast with units 3,4 to illustrate how significantly more advanced mathematical tools are also very useful in image and video analysis. We will connect some of these advanced tools with classical ones, e.g., average with heat flow and median with anisotropic diffusion. This will help to provide unified views to the students.

Week 7: Image and video inpainting (March 3, Quiz deadline 2 weeks later)
Learning objectives:

Students will get involved with a very exciting topic, since image and video inpainting is one of the most used tools in the movie industry. They will learn the problem, and also how they can approach it from multiple directions. This will also help to illustrate how the same problem can be approached from multiple mathematical angles. We will connect this with Shanon’s work providing yet another angle.

Assessment(s): Multiple choice questions. Optional programming exercise. Optional Photoshop exercise.

Week 8: Sparse modeling and compressed sensing (March 10, Quiz deadline 2 weeks later)
Learning objectives:

Here the goal is to present one of the most modern tools in image and video processing, and students will learn something that is today at the top of active research. This will also help to illustrate the use of linear algebra and optimization in image and video processing.

Assessment(s):Multiple choice questions. Optional programming exercise. Optional SPAMS exercise.

Week 9: Medical imaging (March 17, no quiz this week)
Learning objectives:

Image processing has been very successful in medical imaging, and we will use examples from HIV and brain research to illustrate the importance of image processing in solving societal problems. We will describe the basic tools in these exciting applications, from the acquisition to the analysis.

Assessment(s):

Multiple choice questions. Optional programming exercise. Optional ITK/VTK exercise.

我ee的 下学期毕设要做图像处理
用matlab果然上的人不多吧...

昨天晚上一直coding了3个小时才勉强实现了non-local mean的算法,但是效果还是没有ipol上面的好

才找到组织,学校老师上课的时候觉得数学教的很多。下周期中考试,正好有这个课,跟的晚了,但是打算看完。还希望多多交流指教~
