1. Position Details:

Multiple fully-funded CS Ph.D. positions are available in Dr. Jiang's Interdisciplinary AI and Data Science Lab at the University of Florida. We also welcome visiting students and scholars and remote interns. We expect applicants with the following qualities:
  • Passionate in data mining, machine learning, and deep learning research, self-motivated
  • Strong Math/Statistics and/or C/C++/Python programming
  • Good communication skills (Oral, Written) and teamwork
  • Preferred: Research experience in machine learning/deep learning, e.g., spatiotemporal data mining, physics-informed deep learning, geosocial media and NLP, graph neural networks, causal inference, robustness, and security.

About Dr. Zhe Jiang: Dr. Jiang is an assistant professor in CISE at the University of Florida. He received his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Minnesota and his B.E. from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). His lab's mission is to advance AI and machine learning foundations inspired by interdisciplinary applications (Earth sciences, smart cities, biomedicine, public health, precision agriculture, finance). His research results have been published in top AI and Data Science venues, including KDD, ICDM, SDM, AAAI, VLDB, ACMGIS, TKDE, TIST, TKDD, TBD, etc. Dr. Jiang received the NSF CRII award in 2019 and Microsoft AI for Earth award in 2021. He has received over $2.2 Million shares of external grants from multiple federal agencies (NSF, UCAR, USGS, NOAA, UCAR) and industry companies over the last three years. About CISE@UF: The Department of Computer & Information Science & Engineering is consistently ranked among the top CS departments in the nation. CISE has 2,440 undergraduate students and 668 graduate students of which 148 are Ph.D. students. The department currently has 55 faculty. Collectively, the list of achievements and awards received by the faculty include one Fulbright Scholar; 19 NSF CAREER Award winners; eight IEEE Fellows; three ACM Fellows; three AAAS Fellows; one IEEE Computer Society Taylor L. Spring 2022的PHD不需要GRE成绩。最新系里老师投票,通过了2022年春季入学的PHD学生的GRE Waiver。

佛大?自从19年某涛叫兽的事情之后对于这个学校的印象急转直下,能否占楼问一下最后学校怎么处理?

这件事我后来听说后也很难过。那个老师不是我们CISE系的,好像被迫辞职了。但UF这么大的学校,5000多个faculty,这也算偶然个例。学校现在仍有很多来自国内重点大学的学生过来,对中国学生也非常友好。现在新入职的教授好像都要上关于学生抑郁症的网课,出现心理问题及时跟心理中心联系。

目前看应该是要GRE成绩的。https://www.cise.ufl.edu/admissions/graduate/

想申请明年春季入学的请赶紧联系,需要人在美国才有可能。

考虑22年秋季正常时间入学的,请注意申请截止日期Dec 5,2021. 希望感兴趣的同学提前联系老师。系里PHD招生教授话语权比较大,并非强committee制(只要背景没有明显短板)。

对已经在UF的同学,可以随时联系老师。

更新:UF CISE系最近决定,2022 Spring的PHD不需要GRE成绩。
至于2022年秋季会根据疫情的情况再决定。

今天实验室有新下来一个NSF项目,总额50万美金。姜教授是Lead PI(份额26万),与UAB Da Yan老师合作。项目是关于开发创新的工智能技术以及地球空间科学领域的应用。

National Science Foundation
Title: Collaborative Research: OAC CORE: Large-Scale Spatial Machine Learning for 3D Surface Topology in Hydrological Applications
Program: Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (OAC)
Amount: My share: $261,161 ($500K in total)
Period: 10/01/2021 - 09/30/2024.
Role: Lead PI (with UAB PI Dr. Da Yan)

Project Abstract:
Rapid advances in sensing technology and computer simulation have generated vast amounts of 3D surface data in various scientific domains, from high-resolution geographic terrains to electrostatic surfaces of proteins. Analyzing such emerging 3D surface big data provides scientists an opportunity to study problems that were not possible before, such as mapping detailed surface water flow and distribution for the entire continental US. Despite the vast transformative potential, machine learning tools to analyze large-volume 3D surface data significantly fall behind. The project aims to fill this gap by designing a novel parallel spatial machine learning framework for 3D surface topology and implementing the system in a distributed computing environment. The system can produce high-quality observation-based flood inundation maps derived from satellite images. In collaboration with federal agencies (e.g., US Geological Survey, NOAA), the outcomes will enhance the situational awareness for flood disaster response and improve the flood forecasting capabilities of the NOAA National Water Model by filling the gap of lacking observations in model calibration and validation. The proposed software tools will be open-sourced to enhance the research infrastructure for broad geoscience communities. Educational activities include curriculum development, mentoring a group of high school students in data science seminars at the K-12 Summer Camps, and year-long projects for selected high school students in the regional Science Fair competition.

The project, if successful, will transform spatial machine learning research by enhancing terrain awareness through modeling large-scale 3D surface topology. Specifically, the project will bring about the following cyberinfrastructure innovations. First, the team will design a topography-aware spatial probabilistic model called hidden Markov contour forest, which advances existing machine learning tools by incorporating physical constraints of heterogeneous 3D terrains into zonal tree structures in model representation. Second, the team will investigate a parallel inference framework by decomposing both the intra-zone dependency and inter-zone dependency. Finally, the team will implement the proposed parallel learning framework on a distributed computing environment by addressing challenges related to task partitioning, load balancing, and dynamic task scheduling. The proposed system will be deployed for real-world rapid flood disaster response and the validation and calibration of the National Water Model through collaboration with the US Geological Survey and NOAA.

重要更新:2022年春季入学的PHD,不需要GRE成绩。

托福成绩学校要求至少80分(虽然大多数申请者的托福都过100分,但如果其他方面背景很强可以考虑降低系里90分的门槛,至少80分以上)。

具体情况每个人可能都不一样,比如能否transfer一些学分提前满足选课要求,博士科研入门快慢。总体来说,大多数人4-5年(有硕士学位或修过硕士课程的,以及研究上手快的可能phd快些)。

According to a most recent US News ranking,  UF ranked the 5th among all public universities in the US.

恭喜佛罗里达大学首次排入全美公立大学第五名。目前计算机系有59名faculty。

系里官方网站关于秋季入学的申请的deadline是 12月5号,但是对于老师特别愿意招的同学,这个deadline可以适当延期(具体操作需要联系姜老师,发简历和成绩单,论文等背景材料给姜老师邮箱)。

2022秋季申请,“12月五号”这个的系里deadline是灵活的,希望感兴趣的同学尽早联系。
