Google's full-time loop is split into two big sessions with a hiring committee (HC) gate in the middle, then a team-match phase before any offer.

## End-to-end pipeline

1. **Recruiter reach-out** — usually triggered by referral, application, or LinkedIn outreach. A 15–30 min chat covers background, target level, and timing.
2. **OA (optional)** — 90 min, 2 problems on HackerRank for SWE Early Career; sometimes skipped for senior or referred candidates. See the Coin-Collecting Board and Group-by-Digit cards.
3. **R1 — Phone / virtual** — 1 coding round + 1 BQ round, each 45 min. Sometimes combined into a 60-min slot (15 min BQ + 45 min coding). Pass-through rate is the loop's first hard filter.
4. **R2 — Onsite** — typically 2 back-to-back rounds. For SWE: two coding rounds. For MLE / AI-ML: one coding + one ML domain. For L5/L6: adds 1–2 system design + leadership + project deep-dive. As of late 2025, R2 has shifted back to in-person at a Google office for most US loops; coordinator handles flights and hotel.
5. **HC review** — package goes to hiring committee. No candidate-facing event; 1–3 week wait.
6. **Visa check** — recruiter call to confirm work authorization. Does not imply HC has passed yet (most candidates get this call regardless).
7. **Team match** — pass HC and you enter a 1–8 week phase finding a team. Some orgs pre-allocate a team (no team match needed); most loops require browsing open roles and interviewing with HMs.
8. **HM call** — once a team has interest, the hiring manager runs a final fit chat. Offer follows.

## Typical cadence

- Recruiter reach-out → OA: 1–2 weeks
- OA → R1: 1–3 weeks
- R1 → R2: 2–6 weeks (longer if onsite scheduling spans a holiday)
- R2 → HC outcome: 1–3 weeks
- HC pass → team match offer: 2–8 weeks
- End to end: **2–6 months** from first contact to signed offer; 6+ months is not unusual.

## Onsite logistics

- The in-person VO uses a Chromebook in a small conference room; you sign into your own Google email account to take notes.
- Coding happens on a shared whiteboard plus the Chromebook for Google Docs. Bug-free code is not required — interviewers prefer dialogue.
- Each round has a 5-min intro from the interviewer, 35–40 min of problem work, and 5 min for candidate questions.
- Lunch is hosted by a Google employee mid-day and is **not evaluated**.

## Cooling period

- A clean fail at VO triggers a **~12-month cooling period** before you can re-interview for SWE.
- The cooling period applies per company-wide, not per team. Reapplying to a different org during the cooling period typically gets auto-rejected by recruiting tooling.
- If you only failed team match (HC passed), you can usually retry team match within 6–12 months without redoing the loop.

## 2026 R2 scheduling update

Recent L4 / Early Career loops still treat R2 as an onsite session by default, but coordinators can move individual R2 days back to virtual when logistics require it. Candidates should prepare for the same two technical rounds either way: an in-person R2 usually uses office logistics and a Chromebook, while the virtual version keeps the Google Docs / Meet format. Recruiters may be firm about in-person attendance even when the candidate asks to convert; if a health or travel issue exists, expect the coordinator to prefer delaying the onsite over replacing it outright.
