Microsoft runs two parallel hiring tracks that share a recruiter pool but very little else.

## Traditional Loop (Azure / Copilot / Cloud / Office)

Most non-MAI teams use either a **team-specific virtual onsite (VO)** or the standardized **Hiring Event (HE)** track. Both formats land in the same place — four 60-minute rounds — but HE is back-to-back from roughly 8:00am to 1:30pm Pacific with 30-minute breaks, and the slot cannot be moved (HE batches run on fixed weekdays; candidates pick the week, not the time of day). Team-招 VOs are more flexible on time.

Typical four-round shape:

- 3 × coding + BQ (45-50 min coding after 10-15 min behavioral)
- 1 × system design (sometimes substituted with an OOD round)

The HE bar is roughly L61/L62 (SDE II). Failing HE triggers a **6-month freeze on HE re-entry**, but you can still apply through team-招 postings during that window. Team-招 has no such global freeze.

Phone screen, when present, is a single 45-60 minute technical round. Recruiter screens are short logistics calls — process intro, level expectation, location.

After the loop, decisions usually arrive within 1-2 weeks. Team-match for HE candidates can stretch significantly (weeks of org shopping) because HC approval is decoupled from team selection.

## MAI / Microsoft AI Loop (Mustafa Suleyman's org)

MAI runs its own loop and recruiter pool. Structure varies by sub-team (Copilot, pretrain, post-train infra, Bing, Super Intelligence) but the common shape is:

- HM phone (background + level routing)
- 1-2 technical phone screens (often ML-coding, OAI-style problems)
- 4-6 round onsite: project deep dive + 2-3 coding + 1-2 system design (sometimes ML system design) + HM/culture

Onsite is one day rather than HE's two-day option. Recent Copilot / MAI onsites (2026 Q2) increasingly label the coding rounds as "AI Coding Agent" rounds, sometimes paired one with-AI and one without-AI (see the tooling briefing); the deep-dive round may ask you to send a PR link and walk the live diff. MAI coding consistently uses OpenAI-style prompts (in-memory DB, beam search, batch dataloader, stop token detection, DNA sequence reconstruction) — candidates who only prepped LeetCode are blindsided. Recruiters do not pre-share the topic list.


2026 Principal loops can be scheduled as a phone screen followed by a two-day virtual onsite rather than a single HE block. The shape is still four main VO rounds: behavioral plus system design, AI-fluency / applied-AI discussion, another behavioral plus system design, and an OOD coding round.
