## Recruiter Call
A short behavioral conversation. Some candidates are contacted by recruiters or agencies; others apply online.

## Phone Screen
Two 45-minute rounds, back to back with no break. The pairing varies by team:

- **Coding + system design** — the most common pairing for general SWE hires.
- **Systems coding + algorithm coding** — two coding rounds, one of each track.
- **ML infrastructure design + coding** — for ML-platform roles; the "ML design" round is really ML infra (e.g. an inference pipeline), so prepare infrastructure, not modeling.
- **Infra screen** — a light coding exercise plus detailed Kubernetes / Docker questions.

If one track does not produce enough signal, the recruiter may add an extra round (for example, a second algorithm round) before deciding.

## Onsite
Recent onsites are **in person**, with lunch provided. A typical loop has about five rounds:

- Algorithm coding (LeetCode style)
- Systems coding (concurrency)
- One or two system design rounds (often job scheduling or large-scale vehicle data; ML system design for ML roles)
- Hiring manager round (project deep dive + behavioral, sometimes a surprise team-specific design question)
- AI-assisted coding — working through tickets in an existing codebase with an AI assistant (seen in recent loops)

## After the Onsite
Passing the onsite is not the end: candidates then meet senior leadership — described as **two more rounds** or a meeting with three senior leaders. Leadership questions can be open-ended technical design (e.g. how you would design ChatGPT from prompt to output), so prepare for them like a design round, not a chat. After the onsite, HR may also ask about your current level, pay expectations and reasons for leaving.

## Pace and Decisions
Decisions are fast and often terse: rejections commonly arrive the same day or the next day after a phone screen, sometimes even when candidates felt both rounds went cleanly. A "no suitable role right now" response also happens. Treat each round as needing a clear, strong signal on its own.

Loop Structure & Timeline

Two Coding Tracks: Algorithm vs. Systems Coding

AI Platform Intern & New-Grad Loop

Nuro builds autonomous driving technology and hires engineers who are as comfortable with threads and locks as with algorithms: its coding interviews deliberately split into a classic algorithm track and an OS-and-concurrency systems track. System design leans toward the realities of an autonomous fleet — heavy batch compute and enormous volumes of vehicle data — and the process extends past the onsite into meetings with senior leadership.
