Microsoft runs two parallel hiring tracks that share a recruiter pool but very little else.

## Traditional Loop (Azure / Copilot / Cloud / Office)

Most non-MAI teams use either a **team-specific virtual onsite (VO)** or the standardized **Hiring Event (HE)** track. Both formats land in the same place — four 60-minute rounds — but HE is back-to-back from roughly 8:00am to 1:30pm Pacific with 30-minute breaks, and the slot cannot be moved (HE batches run on fixed weekdays; candidates pick the week, not the time of day). Team-招 VOs are more flexible on time.

Typical four-round shape:

- 3 × coding + BQ (45-50 min coding after 10-15 min behavioral)
- 1 × system design (sometimes substituted with an OOD round)

The HE bar is roughly L61/L62 (SDE II). Failing HE triggers a **6-month freeze on HE re-entry**, but you can still apply through team-招 postings during that window. Team-招 has no such global freeze.

Phone screen, when present, is a single 45-60 minute technical round. Recruiter screens are short logistics calls — process intro, level expectation, location.

After the loop, decisions usually arrive within 1-2 weeks. Team-match for HE candidates can stretch significantly (weeks of org shopping) because HC approval is decoupled from team selection.

## MAI / Microsoft AI Loop (Mustafa Suleyman's org)

MAI runs its own loop and recruiter pool. Structure varies by sub-team (Copilot, pretrain, post-train infra, Bing, Super Intelligence) but the common shape is:

- HM phone (background + level routing)
- 1-2 technical phone screens (often ML-coding, OAI-style problems)
- 4-6 round onsite: project deep dive + 2-3 coding + 1-2 system design (sometimes ML system design) + HM/culture

Onsite is one day rather than HE's two-day option. Recent Copilot / MAI onsites (2026 Q2) increasingly label the coding rounds as "AI Coding Agent" rounds, sometimes paired one with-AI and one without-AI (see the tooling briefing); the deep-dive round may ask you to send a PR link and walk the live diff. MAI coding consistently uses OpenAI-style prompts (in-memory DB, beam search, batch dataloader, stop token detection, DNA sequence reconstruction) — candidates who only prepped LeetCode are blindsided. Recruiters do not pre-share the topic list.

2026 Principal loops can be scheduled as a phone screen followed by a two-day virtual onsite rather than a single HE block. The shape is still four main VO rounds: behavioral plus system design, AI-fluency / applied-AI discussion, another behavioral plus system design, and an OOD coding round.

**September 2026 — a three-round senior SWE onsite variant.** A senior SWE process can consist of a technical phone screen followed by three onsite rounds. One such loop combined a project-based behavioral opener and implementation discussion in the first round, two technical exercises in the second, and a library implementation in the third. The four-round formats above do not cover every team-specific loop.

**September 2026 — a five-round SDE II variant.** A team-specific loop can span five rounds: coding with basic data-structure discussion; an AI-assisted design and coding exercise; system design with a hand-written implementation component; an operating-systems and C++ discussion tied to resume projects; and a behavioral review of past work and achievements. Round count and the balance between coding, design, and domain knowledge vary by team. This format does not establish a replacement for the Hiring Event schedule above.

**Late 2026 — MAI principal applied-scientist loop (data platform team).** A Microsoft AI web-data-platform team (separate from Superintelligence) ran a phone screen on ML fundamentals, background, data questions, and some design. The four VO rounds each split roughly in half between coding and system design, with brief data-focused ML questions on class imbalance, evaluation, and data drift. The round topics shared by the recruiter did not fully match the actual interviews. In one case, the requisition was canceled hours after the final round; a completed loop does not guarantee that headcount remains open.

**Late 2026 — a Windows + Devices SWE II loop.** One process began with a resume and behavioral screen, then four same-day rounds: behavioral plus coding, behavioral plus system design, a standalone behavioral round, and resume discussion plus coding. The same coding problem family appeared in both coding rounds. A not-selected status appeared four days after the onsite.

**October 2026 — an SWE II / Senior SWE four-round final loop.** The candidate chose a morning or afternoon block, then ran four consecutive rounds of about an hour each: behavioral plus a rapid-fire CS-fundamentals quiz plus coding; introduction plus coding; a Principal SWE round opening with career-direction questions before system design; and behavioral plus a second system design. Two system-design rounds in one loop is possible at this level. If you do not join on time, the recruiter calls to check whether you are still attending — double-check the start time in your own time zone.

MAI Coding Prep: Pivot Off LeetCode

Intern & NG Loop

Microsoft runs two parallel hiring tracks: the standardized Hiring Event (HE) loop covering Azure, Cloud, Copilot, and Office orgs, and Mustafa Suleyman's MAI org with its own recruiter pool and a distinctly OpenAI-flavored coding rotation. The HE bar is consistent — four 60-minute rounds back-to-back on a fixed weekday — with medium-difficulty algorithms and one system-design slot; MAI loops add project deep-dive depth and pull problems from an in-memory-DB / beam-search / streaming-decoder pool that does not overlap with classic LeetCode prep.
