## Pipeline

A typical Pinterest SWE or MLE loop runs:

1. **Recruiter screen** (~30 min) — role fit, timeline, compensation expectations, and process overview.
2. **Technical screen** (~60 min) — usually one coding problem; MLE screens may add a short ML-fundamentals segment.
3. **Interview round** — commonly five interviews for SWE and four to five for MLE:
   - SWE: three coding, one system design, and one behavioral interview.
   - MLE: one or two coding, two ML design interviews, and one behavioral or hiring-manager interview.
   - Staff loops may add Leadership & XFN Collaboration or a deeper competency round.
4. **Add-on round** — used when one signal needs clarification, often as another coding or design interview.
5. **Debrief, hiring review, and team match** — the interview team evaluates the competency signals; team alignment can remain a separate offer gate.

## Calendar time

Recruiter-to-screen scheduling is often about a week, with another one to two weeks before the full interview round. Debrief and team alignment create the largest variance, so plan for a multi-week process and communicate competing deadlines early. The official candidate guidance directs timeline and scheduling questions to the recruiter or recruiting coordinator.

## Format notes

- Recent technical loops commonly run virtually, but role location follows Pinterest's PinFlex policy and the specific job's office requirements. Confirm the expected interview medium and work location with the recruiter.
- Coding uses a shared editor; confirm whether execution is enabled and state the language before the round.
- University engineering funnels officially use CodeSignal before recruiter and technical interviews. MLE assessments may combine coding with ML concepts or hand calculations.
- Prepare one concise project summary before the hiring-manager conversation; the official process treats that discussion as a deeper qualification assessment rather than a scheduling call.

## September 2026 timing variant

An IC14 loop used a 60-minute phone screen followed by 45-minute onsite interviews, including two algorithm rounds, system design, and an AI-assisted coding round. One candidate received the screen result the same day and the onsite result a week later, then entered team matching. These timings describe an individual loop rather than a guaranteed turnaround.

## September 2026 five-interview variant

Another SWE onsite format has two coding interviews, two system-design interviews, and one behavioral interview. One loop placed behavioral first, followed by the two coding rounds and then the two design rounds. A phone-screen-to-onsite path with the same five-round mix proceeded to team matching after a successful interview decision. Confirm the actual round allocation for your loop, since the coding/design split varies.

## September 2026 additional loop formats

A SWE onsite can combine two conventional coding interviews, one system-design interview, one behavioral interview, and one AI-assisted coding interview. The AI exercise is a separate part of that five-interview mix.

A Senior Staff backend-infrastructure process began with a recruiter conversation and a primarily behavioral hiring-manager conversation, followed by a separate technical-depth interview after nearly two weeks. That candidate received a rejection two days after the technical-depth round. This sequence illustrates an early senior-level evaluation path, not a complete onsite schedule or a guaranteed response timeline.

## October 2026: Data Engineer and IC15 notes

Data Engineer roles carry the SDE title and run the same interview process as SDE, including the same coding phone screen — prepare the standard SDE coding question set rather than SQL- or pipeline-specific material. An IC15 loop paired a graph-search phone screen with a virtual onsite whose first interview was a data-structure design-and-implement exercise followed by complexity discussion.

Coding Round Flavor: Custom Library Over LeetCode

ML System Design: Practitioner vs System Design

Remote, Compensation, and Process Signals

Pinterest's loop leans hard on a recurring custom prompt library — escape-room state-tracking, trie-backed access control, ads/log aggregation, splitwise-style settlement — over canonical LeetCode. ML system design is split into two distinct rounds ("ML Practitioner" and "ML System Design") that effectively cover the same recommender / retrieval / ranking surface from two angles, with embedding-heavy product framing throughout. Fully-remote, front-loaded compensation, and long team-match windows define the experience as much as the technical bar.
