## Standard SWE / MLE loop

1. **Recruiter screen** — short call covering background, comp expectations, and target org (Ads, ML Platform, Subreddit infra, etc.). Reddit is fully remote in the US, which the recruiter will usually flag.
2. **Phone screen (60 min)** — one coding problem from the company-specific bank (Tennis, Report Chain, Chat Merge, or a rate-limiter variant). Conducted on CodeSignal with a video call; the interviewer expects clarification + OOD before any code is written. MLE candidates instead get a Jupyter EDA + model-training live coding (post-category CTR).
3. **Onsite / virtual onsite (4–5 rounds)** — typically:
   - 1 coding round (often a multi-part variant of a screen-bank prompt)
   - 1–2 system-design rounds (Game Leaderboard, Live Chat, Notification, Job Scheduler, or an ML-flavored Feature Store / Post-Comment Ranking for ML roles)
   - 1 hiring-manager round (domain-heavy for Ads / ML Platform — see [[hiring-manager-domain-depth]])
   - 1 cross-functional / PM-XFN behavioral
   - Occasionally a product-sense round ("improve Reddit onboarding")
4. **Recruiter wrap + team match** — even a clean loop is gated on team-match. Candidates routinely sit 4–8 weeks in this stage; multiple candidates have been ghosted at this step despite positive interviewer feedback.

## Timeline expectations

- Phone screen → onsite scheduling: 1–3 weeks.
- Onsite → verdict: 1–2 weeks.
- Verdict → team match: 2–8 weeks, frequently inconclusive.
- Cooldown after a reject: **12 months** (confirmed with recruiters).

## Pipeline friction patterns

- Down-leveling is common: staff candidates being moved to senior, senior to mid, sometimes mid-loop. The recruiter usually frames it as "no open headcount at your level."
- A subset of candidates report passing all technical rounds, getting positive cross-functional feedback, and still being soft-rejected after HM — particularly in Ads, where the HM round drills role-specific ad-tech depth that generic SWE prep does not cover.
- The product is fully remote, but Bay Area / NYC team match still tends to clear faster.

## MLE final-loop detail

Recent MLE loops follow a consistent shape: an ML **case-study phone screen** (live Jupyter EDA plus model training on a post-engagement dataset, sometimes with deliberately dirty data — missing values, ~20% positive-class imbalance), then a four-round onsite:

1. **ML Fundamentals** — verbal deep-dive, e.g. how you would build a CVR (conversion-rate) model end to end.
2. **ML System Design** — heavy on inference and feature serving (feature store, online/offline parity, serving SLOs).
3. **Coding** — a bank prompt (e.g. Billing Status) or a backend/protocol implementation.
4. **Hiring-manager BQ** — standard behavioral plus domain depth.

A distinct **"Backend Coding"** round also appears, which recruiters explicitly flag as different from the usual algorithmic screen: implement a small networked service — e.g. a simplified memcached-style TCP key-value server with byte-count-framed `get` / `set` — rather than solve a LeetCode-style problem.

## Fast team-match variant (July 2026)

The long team-match tail is not universal. A recent SWE loop moved into team match the day after the onsite, completed matching within one week, and proceeded directly to an offer. Treat the 2–8 week range as planning guidance rather than a mandatory delay; recruiter responsiveness and an immediately available team can compress the final stage substantially.

## General-pool MLE transition (September 2026)

A team-specific MLE application can move into general-pool hiring after the technical screen when the original opening disappears. One such loop scheduled four virtual rounds of about one hour each: ML Fundamentals, coding, ML system design, and hiring manager. The fundamentals interview focused on ranking despite the candidate's initial generative-AI team application. After an unsuccessful first onsite round, the recruiter canceled the three remaining rounds. Confirm the current hiring pool and expected technical domain when the position changes; completing the phone screen does not guarantee that every scheduled onsite round will take place.

Hiring-Manager Round: Domain Depth Trap

Question Bank Is Small and Recycled

Leveling & Down-Level Risk

Reddit's loop runs on a small, slowly-rotating bank of company-specific coding prompts (Tennis Scoring, Report Chain, Chat Message Merge) paired with product-flavored system-design rounds (Game Leaderboard, Live Chat, Notification System). The bar is high on clean OOD and crisp clarification — multi-part prompts are routinely under-scoped on purpose, and rounds end without finishing all parts. Ads and ML Platform orgs add a hiring-manager domain round on top of the standard loop; recent cohorts also report aggressive down-leveling and long team-match limbo after a passing loop.
