In most places I've been to, a 2bdrm apt can have up to 5 adult occupants.
However, even if this complies with all the legal requirements, you shouldn't move in without asking for the landlord's permission first, because there is usually a clause in the lease about getting landlord approval for any guests who stay over 30 day or even 2 weeks.  If you plan to stay long-term, the landlord is very likely to ask you to sign the lease together with your bf such that both of you need to take responsibilities for any obligations under the lease. And some landlord might charge extra rent per additional occupant. Anyway, you definitely should ask the landlord beforehand.

租房时说好两个人住房东和室友同意就可以了，美国可没要求同居一定要结婚证。你放心好了。
