嗨！
我的名字是 James Geller，大家都叫我 Jim，甚至学生们也叫我 Jim。我是新泽西理工学院 (NJIT) 数据科学系的教授兼系主任。我自 1988 年以来一直在 NJIT 工作，因为这是一所优秀的大学。
我于 1988 年在纽约州立大学布法罗分校 (SUNY Buffalo) 获得计算机科学博士学位，研究方向是人工智能/知识表示。是的，我在那个时候就已经研究人工智能了。
我在医学信息学、知识表示及其他领域发表了 230 多篇期刊和会议论文，以及 14 章书籍章节。
截至目前，我已单独或以共同导师的身份指导 24 名博士生顺利毕业。

Hi!


My name is James Geller. People call me Jim. Even students call me Jim. I am a Professor and the Chair of the Data Science Department at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). I have worked at NJIT since 1988, because it is a great university. 


I received my PhD degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY Buffalo) in 1988 in Computer Science, with a focus on Artificial Intelligence/Knowledge Representation. Yes, I did AI back then. 
 
I have published over 230 journal and conference papers and 14 book chapters in Medical Informatics, Knowledge Representation, and other areas.


I have graduated 24 PhD students, either alone or as co-advisor. 


Several of my papers were about two important medical terminology systems, the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) and the Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine – Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT). 


I am currently the recipient of a million dollar government grant with the title: Applying Student Knowledge for Success in Cybersecurity and Data Science, for support of undergraduate students from poor families. This is in collaboration with four other universities (total amount over $5 million).
 
I have founded several student clubs at NJIT for Women in Computing and Hispanics in Computing.
 
In 2012 I was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI).  That is a big honor.
 
I have received the NJIT Master Teacher Designation (2005) and three other NJIT teaching awards in 2002, 2003 and 2011. In Fall 2024 I received the Robert W. Van Houten Award for Teaching Excellence. This award is granted by the NJIT Alumni Association. Professors cannot "apply" for it.


In September 2020 I received the NJIT Constance A. Murray Award for Advancing Diversity. 


I also received an NJIT College Research Award (2010).

Requirements: I am looking for students who are ready to work hard, who are able to listen, and who are willing to solve problems themselves.  I need students with good knowledge of writing and debugging programs. Nowadays most work is done in Python. A little bit of knowledge about biology or medicine is helpful, but not absolutely necessary.
