早上收到小秘来信，对已发第一轮AD的同学们开始审理scholarship了。祝大家好运。

We do automatically consider all applicants for merit-based, departmental scholarships, and since you applied by the January 15th deadline, you will considered in the first round of decisions for these scholarships.  You do not need to do anything else!  

In terms of research assistantships, faculty typically prefer to hire students they know and who have performed well in the program, so it is not likely that you would be able to secure one of these positions for your first semester.  However, you could certainly use our web site to identify faculty whose research interests you, and email them to introduce yourself to begin the process of exploring future research opportunities.  Teaching assistantships are rare within our own program for our master’s students.  If you feel your background may qualify you to assist with an undergraduate course in another department, you could check with relevant departments to see if they have needs for graduate student instructors, which carries tuition, stipend, and health insurance.  Each semester, about 10 SI students get positions as teaching assistants in other departments.

I would also encourage you to look into sources of funding outside of SI.  We have been extremely successful with our students receiving external scholarships, and I would encourage you to apply for any that seem like a good fit for you.  May of our students also work about 15 hours a week in a relevant position to help build their resumes.  We provide direct assistance with our Career Development Office to help students secure these positions as needed.  Pretty much 100% of students who are interested in having part-time jobs are able to get them.  You can find more information about these resources at http://www.si.umich.edu/academics/funding-your-degree.  Make sure to look at the external funding and part-time jobs pages.
