LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Two USC students were murdered Wednesday morning in an attempted carjacking in from of their home in the West Adams area.

Officials say the victims, a man and a woman, were sitting in a BMW in the 2700 block of Raymond Avenue when they were approached by an armed man at 1 a.m., according to KNX 1070′s John Brooks.

The man was shot pointblank in the head when he refused to get out of the car. The woman was also shot.

Both victims, who have been identified as graduate students from China, were declared dead at a local hospital.

Police have erected tents to continue collecting evidence in the rain.

While officials say it was too dark to get a good description of the shooter, there were several witnesses who say the shooter drove away in a dark-colored vehicle.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A homicide investigation is under way after two University of Southern California students were killed in a shooting near campus Wednesday morning.

Police sources said Wednesday the man and woman killed during a possible attempted robbery near USC were students at the university from China.

The shooting was reported about 1 a.m. in the 2700 block of Raymond Avenue. Few details were immediately available, but officials said each of the victims, described as Asians in their early 20s, was shot at least once in their BMW.

Police believe they were shot during an attempted robbery. Investigators did not immediately release a suspect description.

The Los Angeles Police Department says a man and a woman, both in their 20s, were shot around 1 a.m. as they were sitting in a car on the 2700 block of Raymond Avenue near West 27th Street. Both victims were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

A USC public safety official told Eyewitness News via email that both victims were graduate students at the school. Their identities were not released pending family notification.

The victims were inside a newer model charcoal gray BMW. Police say there were several bullet holes in the car, and the driver's side window was shattered.

There is USC student housing in the area surrounding the shooting site. USC campus police are assisting LAPD with the investigation.

Police have not nailed down a motive yet, but one theory is the shooting may have been part of a bungled carjacking attempt. Authorities say they will comb through area surveillance footage for suspect clues.

作为双方遇难者在USC的同学好友的代表，我怀着极其悲痛的心情和对媒体不实报道的极度愤怒，对目前网络及媒体不顾其职业道德对遇难者情况的不实报道，做出如下澄清：

1.被害双方在来USC近两年的时间里，一直生活节俭，每学期都各自与其他同学合租房子，共用卧室，以节省房租。而女生更是为了把房租降到最低，选择了相对不太安全的学校西边居住。

2.被害双方来美已经近两年的时间里，一直没有买车。本学期由于即将毕业找工作需要，遇难男生花一万美金于二手车行购买了03年已行驶八万英里的二手宝马轿 ...
