September 27, 2013 (URBANA, Ill.) -- Police say Yongfei Ci, a 29-year-old University of Illinois student, has been arrested for the murder of his ex-girlfriend in her Urbana apartment a few blocks north of the campus.

Police say a 25-year-old University of Illinois student was found dead in her apartment in the 1300-block of North Lincoln Friday morning after her roommate alerted police to the incident.

Lt. Bryant Seraphin tells The (Champaign) News-Gazette that officers were called shortly after 11 a.m. to the apartment complex. The university police issued alerts to students and faculty, but the campus was not locked down.

Seraphin says the victim's roommate was in the apartment during the killing and had been bound. He says she broke free and ran into the building's courtyard where she met officers. He did not say how the woman was killed.

In a press release, police said they used cell phone technology to locate Ci at a motel in Champaign, a few blocks north of the woman's apartment. Police say he was taken into custody without incident.

An autopsy on the victim is pending, and police say they are continuing to investigate.
