请教关于u Cincinnati的finance aid申请问题

在网申到第二步的时候，要求填U.S. Social Security Number。 一般的经验是没有就空着，但是保存的时候，弹出一个warning框，建议填，大意说不填不给finance aid。是我理解错了还是真是这样？请有经验的解答，谢谢！
