Kevin Shen had wanted to be on Jeopardy! since he started watching the quiz show at age 5, but the 20-year-old UC Berkeley math major never really thought it would happen. That is, until he got a call in November from producers telling him he had made the cut for the Jeopardy! College Championship.
“I was just in disbelief,” he said. “I think the person on the phone could tell I was freaking out.”
The Cupertino native will make his debut Wednesday (7 p.m., KGO-TV) in the quarterfinals of the 10-day tournament, which pits 15 college students from across the country against each other for a grand prize of $100,000 and an automatic berth in the Tournament of Champions.
To prepare for the appearance, which was filmed in January, Shen watched as many old episodes as he could get his hands on — but that method wasn’t especially helpful, he said.
“Studying doesn’t really help because the pace is just so fast. Everything I got right I think I probably already knew,” he said.
Shen isn’t sure where he’ll watch the show Wednesday night, since neither he nor any of his friends has a television.
“I told my friends that, if they find a spot to watch it, I’ll buy the pizza,” he said.
He wouldn’t say how he did.
