The Peng group is seeking enthusiastic graduate students to join. Aiming to understand the fundamental principles of living systems at the scales of molecules, genomes and cells, we conduct highly interdisciplinary research in the areas of computational biophysics and biology, bioinformatics and systems biology. Specifically, our research focuses include 1) the information-encoding and processing at the molecular and genetic levels, gene regulatory circuits underlying specific biological processes; 2) Emergent complexity of genome, maintenance and development of cell identity; and 3) Spatial architecture of the genome and its functional significance in gene regulation. We employ a combination of multi-omics data analytics, machine learning, and physics-inspired model-based simulation and theoretical approaches. We collaborate closely with leading experimental groups and publish in high-impact journals, including Nature, Cell, Science, Nature Immunology, Nature Communications, Cancer Cell. Group members have been well-placed in both academia (i.e., postdoc, faculty) and industry (i.e., data scientist, biopharma). GWU is an R1 university located in the neighborhood of prominent scientific organizations (National Institutes of Health, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Janelia Farm, NIST, NASA, NSF, Children's National). The Greater Washington D.C. is endowed with a mild climate yet four distinct seasons and is home to numerous attractions. The area has an ethnically and culturally diverse population, including a large and vibrant Chinese community. While the federal government still anchors the region, it has grown into a technology and business hub with a strong job market.
