I would like topursue graduate studies for a Master’s Degree of computer science in xxxx startingin the spring of 2015. My overall goal is to reinvent myself to be aneuroinformatist by combining my background in neuroscience and the education Iwill gain from your program in computer science.

Extensiveneuroscience research brewed my keen interest in computer science. Aftergraduating from college, I obtained full scholarship from the State Universityof New York to study for my PhD in neuroscience, the study of the mostfascinating and complex organ, the brain. With my PhD degree, I securedassistant professorship in xxxx, the leading institution of science research inChina. As stated in my resume, I have published 3 first-author articles and 5coauthor ones in world-widely peer-reviewed journals, recently submitted anotherfirst-author article, won government-issued funding of approximately $33,000and jointly mentored 4 graduate students who have graduated successfully.

However,the more I advance in neuroscience, the more important a role of computerscience emerges. The neural system consists of numerous circuits ofheterogeneous structures, types of cells, as well as cascades of inter- andintra-cellular events. To fully understand an issue in neuroscience requiresintegration of massive, often unstructured data and information spanning fromgenes to behaviors. Speaking from my personal experience, the processing and storagecapacity of human brain has become the top speed-limiting factor in neuroscienceresearch. Neuroinformatics has grown into a standalone and fruitful discipline todiscover knowledge from the ocean of neural data and information usingcomputational models and analytical tools. As a scientist, I feel an irresistibleurge to gain solid knowledge and skills in computer science, in order to stayabreast of the most promising branch of neuroscience and to open the gate tothe broader field of bioinformatics.

My undergraduate education, though not majoring in computer science, preparedme with fundamentals of computer science,including principles of computer science, database and programming. Once Idecided to extend myself to computer science, I refreshed my knowledge usingmassive open online courses and familiarized myself with Python as a trainingtool of programming. The courses also ignited in me the awe of the beauty ofclassic algorithms and solving problems with innovative mathematical thinking. Iam well-positioned and eager to appreciate more theories of computer scienceand their applications in scientific computing and tool development.

In addition, I am confident in my learning ability, for Ihave come through all challenges in academic life. My undergraduate grades andranking increased monotonically throughout the 4 years. During the university quarantinefor Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2003, I obtained high scores infinal examinations by self-studying using only online syllabus, in the meantimeof preparing for Graduate Record Examination and Test of English as a ForeignLanguage. Four months into my assistant professorship in China, I composed agrant proposal on an entirely new topic within 10 days that received top ratingand full funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, whichusually happens to scientists with much more experience and more senior title. Allof my academic record and research achievements, together with my preparationfor computer science demonstrate my competence for pursuing a master degree in xxxx’sComputer Science program.
