      单词有两个层面上的意思，第一层面的意思是单词的具体含义；第二层面的意思是单词的功能含义。下面，我们以两组单词为例，让大家了解单词的功能含义。

向大家介绍的第一组单词是：historical与fiction。首先我们先看看这两个单词的中英文释义。

historical：描述历史的，基于史实的

      Historical books, films, or picturesdescribe or represent people, situations, or things that existed in the past.

      例句：Historically,royal marriages have been cold, calculating affairs.

fiction: 虚构；杜撰；编造

       A statement oraccount that is fiction is not true.         

       例句：The truth orfiction of this story has never been truly determined.

       下面，我们来看看这些单词在GRE语文中的考法：

1、The notionthat a parasite can alter the behavior of a host organism is not mere fiction;indeed, the phenomenon is not even rare.

【表层意思】：有种观念认为寄生虫能够改变寄主的行为习惯，这种观念并不是虚构的；寄生虫能够改变寄主行为习惯的现象还不少。

【底层意思】：寄生虫能够改变寄主行为习惯的这种观点是真的，而且这种例子还很多。

2、The recentpublication of the painter Robert Motherwell’s substantial body of writing, aswell as writings by fellow Expressionist Barnett Newman, undermines AnnGibson’s assertion that the Abstract Expressionists were reluctant toarticulate issues of artistic meaning in their work and suggests that thissupposed reticence was perhaps more artistic posturing than historical fact.

【表层意思】：画家RM最近出版的著作以及表现主义者BN的著作反驳了AG的观点。AG认为抽象表现主义者不愿意将他们作品中的艺术含义表述清楚。画家RM这部著作还认为，这种所谓的矜持与其说是在艺术表达上实事求是，不如说是在艺术表达上装腔作势。

【底层意思】：RM与BN的观点与AG的观点是相反的。AG认为表现主义很抽象，也就是很“假”；RM与BN认为表现主义很实在，也就是很“真”。

向大家介绍的第二组单词是：surrealism、expressionism、naturalistic。首先我们先看看这三个单词的中英文释义：

surrealism：（艺术、文学上）超现实主义，超现实派

Surrealism is astyle in art and literature in which ideas, images, and objects are combined in a strange way, like in a dream.

expressionism：（艺术、文学或音乐的）表现主义，表现派

Expressionism isa style of art, literature, and music which uses symbols and exaggeration to representemotions, rather than representing physical reality.      

naturalistic  （艺术或写作）自然主义的，写实主义的；

Naturalistic artor writing tries to show people and things in a realistic way.

       下面我们来看看这些单词在GRE语文中的考法：

1、In addition,the style of some Black novels, like Jean Toomer’s Cane, verges onexpressionism or surrealism; does this technique provide a counterpoint to theprevalent theme that portrays the fate against which Black heroes are pitted, atheme usually conveyed by more naturalistic modes of expression.

【表层意思】：此外，诸如JT的著作Cane这样的一些黑人小说的风格非常接近于表现主义，或者说是超现实主义。这种技法不同于那些通过自然主义的技法来描述黑人主人公与命运相抗争的主题。

【底层意思】：风格抽象（很装、很假）的黑人小说与风格朴实（很真）的黑人小说是不同的。
