One Ph.D. position is available in Prof. Huan Lei's research group in the Department of Computational Mathematics, Science, and Engineering at Michigan State University starting in Fall 2025 or Spring 2026. The research direction is in computational mathematics with a focus on developing scientific machine-learning based approaches for learning structure-preserving partial differential equation (PDE) and stochastic differential equation (SDE) models for multiscale problems.
Research Overview
===
Dr. Huan Lei is an Assistant Professor in the [Department of Computational Mathematics, Science, and Engineering](https://cmse.msu.edu/) at Michigan State University, with a joint appointment in the [Department of Statistics and Probability](https://stt.natsci.msu.edu/). He received his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Brown University under the supervision of Prof. George Karniadakis. His research lies in computational mathematics, particularly in developing numerical methods for learning partial differential equation (PDE) and stochastic differential equation (SDE) models arising from multi-scale problems. He focuses on developing structure-preserving algorithms that retain essential mathematical properties, such as conservation laws, variational structures, and physical constraints. His recent work integrates scientific machine learning (SciML) with numerical analysis to construct accurate and physically interpretable PDE and SDE models of multi-scale systems directly from first-principle descriptions.
About the position
===
One Ph.D. position is available starting in Fall 2025 or Spring 2026. While my research is motivated by computational modeling of multi-scale problems, such as molecular, fluid, and kinetic systems, my primary goal is to develop mathematically rigorous and computationally efficient methods for learning and simulating complex dynamical systems. I seek motivated Ph.D. students with a strong background in numerical analysis, applied mathematics, or scientific computing who are interested in developing new numerical methods rather than applying existing approaches to domain-specific applications.
