At first, I feltdiscouraged that the experiment had not gone well, since I had spent so muchtime preparing for it. The encouragement of Prof. XXX and my reviewing andrevising the previous research strategy, however, gave me the strength toproceed. After several other elaborate tests, the display effect progressed. Icould present the spikes to people through electric control. However, I wantedto make the display more exciting, working to control the movement of ferrofluidvia the voice of people. As always, I moved heaven and earth to fulfill mygoal. But, I failed again, and therein discovered that I have a lot to learn,such as voice control technique.

I devoted weekends and holidays to my research, even forsaking the ChineseNew Year with my family. These ambitions may be lofty, but I have the confidence that I can reach my goals viacompleting a Ph.D. at MIT.

对于Why XXX university or why XXX department这类问题,其实各大学校,各大系都已经在他们主页上说了出来,只不过有时不是那么明显。你要做的就是写出真正这个学校吸引你的是哪方面,当然全部照搬学校的说辞肯定是不对。比如某个学校的motto吸引了你,VTmottoUt Prosim (That I MayServe)”就吸引了我。再比如某些学校的labrotation可以让你灵活选择,同样都可以写。


我的PS能够写到这样,主要归结于我平时的积累,我每天,每个月,每学年都会反思、都会去总结自己走过的路。当我要写PS时,翻看着以前记录下的每一步,每一个脚印,自己都禁不住流泪。我想首先应该感动自己,然后才有一种感染力去感染别人,感动教授。

我是以研究方向申请的,主申磁性液体,而磁性液体的研究本身就涉及到交叉学科,所以就很容易理解为什么我会申请这么多的专业,当然物理专业中,FSU,MTU是为了凑数的,呵呵。因为我觉得全部按照研究方向申请,不保险。同时我又没有参加GRE SUB考试,所以我申请的是物理下的医用物理之类的交叉学科项目。WSU的项目是多个学院联合举办的,物理系,材料系,电子系,所以会比较容易申请的,但是这个学校奖的名额很少。申请策略也是申请中很重要的一点。到了研究生阶段,其实专业真的不重要,重要的是方向。

我的家庭背景只允许我全奖出去,所以我申请了硕博连读项目。当时也是打定了主意非全奖不出去。


219日,MIT拒了我,我慌了,感觉今年申请可能会无望了。当时想如果今年出不去怎么办,想了很久,决定如果没出去成,边工作边再申请一年,我不会甘心的。正是带着这样的心情,回到学校:228日我下了火车,哼着歌,理了发,买了顶小红帽,戴在头上,取意为“鸿运当头”,没想到过了两天(33日),offer就来了,这个全奖来的真具喜剧色彩。

选校


毫不夸张的说,好的选校绝对成功了一大半。选校也是贯穿于整个申请始终的,不是一次就能完成的。我主要是以研究方向为标准来选校,同时兼顾综合排名以及专业排名,到了后期补申,主要考虑专业排名。刚开始申请了八所,全部按照研究方向来定的,后来补申了五所,选择排名一百以后的。. check 1point3acres for more.


我是如何选校的?. From 1point 3acres bbs

申请前:由于我接触实验早,在大二上学期就开始接触了,当然这个时候谈不上科研,只能说是学徒,呵呵。那个时候我就明白一点“身为一名研究者或者准研究者(也就是那些将要从事研究工作的人),你必须非常熟悉在这个领域中的动静,并且随时掌握各项新的发现。”,当时我不知道有些什么强大的数据库,只知道中国知网。当时是借助GOOGEL一点一点自己去发掘我感兴趣的领域。也就是这样,我基本上大概知道了这个领域有哪些人在做些什么样的研究,为我的申请奠定了良好的基础。


申请中主要利用以下两个数据库

Webof science 独特的被引文献SCI检索系统,我主要用来找教授,知道了教授的名字我就利用google了解其全面信息。知道这个数据库,还是一次去大连理工大学听讲座听到的,汗颜!

ProQuest学位论文全文检索数据库ProQuest Digital DissertationsPQDD)是世界著名的学位论文数据库,收录有欧美1000余所大学文、理、工、农、医等领域的博士、硕士学位论文,是学术研究中十分重要的信息资源。同样的,找我感兴趣领域的硕博士论文,主要是在论文中找到指导教师的姓名,知道了指导教师姓名,就利用google了解其全面信息


根据这些选定学校后,你要进行删选,去相关学校系里,研究生院看申请要求,申请中的一个大忌就是不仔细看学校要求,盲目申请。比如有些学校明确说了TOEFL低于多少分不予考虑审材料,TOEFL低于多少分不考虑给奖,没有SUB成绩不考虑给奖之类的,当然看到了这些,也不能立马放弃,因为有时候有的学校网站申请要求不怎么去更新,你要去向学校核实这些信息,如果实在是那样说的,就不要申请。当然还有其他考虑去删选学校,这里就不细说了。

陶瓷


     对于陶瓷(即与教授,小蜜发邮件联系),众说纷纭,有的说该套,有的说不用套,这个各人根据自己情况决定,论坛里也有很多相关的帖子,大家去搜索

着看看。以下结合自己经历谈些看法。


陶瓷目的是什么?

与教授陶瓷的目的并不是以录取为目标,而是学术交流,教授现在都是很精明的,他们往往鼓励申请,鼓励申请是为了他们自己能够优中选优。往往在收到

教授的鼓励申请的邮件,千万不能就此罢了,继续深套;与小蜜陶瓷的目的是为了最大程度掌握自己能掌握的信息。


如何陶瓷?

邮箱选择:个人首先推荐edu邮箱,其次是hotmailgmail,极其不推荐QQ邮箱、163

邮件标题 Prospective Ph.D Student Interested in xxx;Prospective Ph.D Student Have Problems about xxx. 这些都一目了然,建议都以

Prospective Ph.D Student 开头。如果事情很紧急,你可以在标题中加入Emergency字样,或者直接电话联系

称呼:HiProfessor!  Dear Professor xxx!

主体:一句话介绍自己,然后直入主题。

结尾: Your early reply will be highlyappreciated!

套磁过程:套磁之前至少要浏览教授主页,读读他的文章。读文章,主要是为了你能够与教授有话说,而不是简单地询问招生否等基础问题,向他提出论文

中你不懂的东西以及你的一些看法,如果有可能再现教授的实验,指出可以改进的地方等等。教授不回信很正常,做好不回信的准备。如果一个星期之后,

还没回,你可以这样发信过去“My email server has been acting up lately, so I'm not sure whethermy previous message was went properly; here

it is again just in case. Thanks!如果没回,我感觉就没有必要再发了。如果你和教授聊的很愉快,那么当你提交申请之后,记得提醒下教授,你提交了

申请,让教授注意你的材料。


与教授陶瓷整个过程


有了学术上的问题,就大胆去问,大胆去联系



     这在我上完新东方GRE强化班的第一封套磁信,那时学术上想深入时,遇到了瓶颈。当时在北京新东方时,美申部主任田旺旺老师给我们做了一个留学讲

座,讲座上讲了一些怎么套磁的细节问题,邮箱名问题等等,回来后我申请了一个hotmail邮箱,给教授发了信,当时是思量了很久的!

Dear XXX:


Your attachment to me has some beautiful ferrofluid patterns in a spiral cone.

The analysis of such a complicated geometry is very difficult andprobably cannot be done in analytical closed form.

Most likely it would be necessary to useadvanced numerical solvers of electromagnetic field problems such as AnsoftMaxwell but even then I

doubt that you could obtain numerical solutions of theferrofluid peaking shapes.

However, Ithink that an adequate understanding of your patterns can be obtained from asimple planar geometry which was first analyzed

and published by Cowley and Rosensweig.

I attach a copy of theirpaper which I hope you find useful.. From 1point 3acres bbs

An excellent reference about Ferrofluids isthe paperback book Ferrohydrodynamics (publsihed by Dover Publications Inc) byRosensweig which

The "normal-field instability" isdiscussed in Chapter 7 of the Rosensweig book.

1. Read the paper and your lecture note,learn the fundamental equations about Ferrofluid instability, then furtherlylearn the book Rosensweig

writed. Try to find some right understandings aboutthe behavior.

2. Try to simulate the spike or thebehavior.

During the research, I might have somedifficults,I will try to solve by myself first ,then if it do not work ,I willturn to you for some help.

Dear XXX:


1. The phrase stability refers to the factthat with no magnetic field or with a small magnetic field less than M_crit asgiven in eq. 21 or 26 in the . From 1point 3acres bbs

Cowley-Rosensweig paper the interface remains flat.This is the stable situation.If the magnetization exceeds M_crit, then theinterface is . From 1point 3acres bbs

unstable with a flat interface but reaches a new stableequilibrium with fluid peaks.It is verydifficult to calculate the shapes of the fluid peaks.

This would take a nonlinear analysis. One researcher who numerically solves for thepeak shapes is Boudouvis.You should doa literature search

for Boudouvis' publications.


2. The analysis in the Cowley-Rosensweigpaper is only for first order linear perturbations.The analysis for second order and higher  

perturbations is non-linear and thus very difficult.I am not aware of any non-linear analysis offerrofluid instability.


3. The relationship of b=mu*h is true ineq. 3 for the x and y components. Because the applied DC magnetic field, B_0 and H_0 are z directed

and because the magnetization characteric of B(H) is nonlinear, the perturbationfield in the z direction is given by eq. 2 where the slope of

B-H characteristic is used rather than the ratio of B/H. I believe that this is correct.


4. The usual convention is to write h=- grad(phi) but it is not required.Eq. 4 iscorrect as a definition and I believe that the paper is consistent

with thisdefinition throughout the paper.


5. The boundary conditions at an interfacewith no surface current, as is the usual case for a ferrofluid/fluid interface,is continuity of tangential

H and normal B. The difficulty is that the interfacial deflection has a normal with x,y, and z components.Consistent with alinear analysis that

neglects second order and higher terms, the results of eq.7 and the equation between eqs. 5 and 6 are correct.

In my Lecture 8 that I sent you in my lastemail to you, please look at page 2 where I derive the normal to the interfacewith a fluid deflection

and use the boundary conditions of continuity of normalb and tangential h at the fluid interface. However, my analysis assumes that the

magnetic permeability mu isconstant for the ferrofluid rather than being dependent on H as Rosensweig assumes.Our two results should -baidu 1point3acres

Ifz_0 gets too large then second and higher order terms become important and eq.13 becomes inaccurate.


7. The parameter r is defined just aftereq. 10. If mu with a hat=mu, ther=mu/mu0 as you conclude.

The equationthat you quote (where do you get this result from?) is valid if the magnetizationcharacteristic has M varying linearly with H.


8. The wavenumber k=2*pi/lambda where thewavelength lambda is the distance between peaks.


9. As the magnetic field is increased waybeyond the value for the onset of instability (peaking) the peaks get higher,thinner, and sharper.

It is verydifficult to solve for the exact shape as the analysis needs to be nonlinear.


10. Since the theory has criticalmagnetization M_crit depending on the fluid density, experiments are done fordifferent fluids with different

densities. This allows the theory to be compared with experiments.


11. The greater the density of ferrofluid,the greater is the magnetization thereby when comparing theory and experimentyou must account

for the change in magnetic permeability.

Here are some comments on the papers thatyou sent to me.


1. "A new method...."

Your paper shows a new and pleasing methodof displaying ferrofluid and using it to detect the presence of magnetic fieldlines. Just looking

at the picture makes me want to hold one of these glassglobes.


The methodology itself has been known formany years, see the attachments. The PDF shows packaging that we used in the early1970's at

Ferrofluidics Corporation when I was President of the company (formername of Ferrotec Corporation). It featured a square, flat container of

the twofluids that was sold commercially. Patterning that could be created using thecell is shown in the illustrations.


One of the 'bottle cell' attachments showsan item that is included in an educational kit that is manufactured by FerrotecCorporation and is

sold through several other companies currently. The otherbottle cell attachment is a PowerPoint visual that I used in a seminarpresentation a

few years ago. The bottle cell is the same one that is includedin the educational kit.


Finding a combination of transparent fluidand ferrofluid that resists degradation with time was a challenge.

在我申请过程中,要特别感谢Yangyang MM,虽然素不相识,但给了我很多的鼓励与帮助。她指出了我CV中的致命错误,网上的论文作者顺序在与我给

出的不一致。当我遇到很大困惑(学校背景,非211,非985;专业背景,物理学师范,半文半理,但我申请了物理,化学,材料,机械等专业;GRE数学

偏低。反正感觉就是多处硬伤)时,能够不厌其烦给我解惑,她下面的一席话让我有动力继续完成申请。

选学校这种事情是要自己做research做,你的专业方向我不会帮你去调查,我自己选的时候是以研究方向为重。排名什么的,除了告诉亲朋好友好听一点,还有什么用呢?这是你为自己将来作的一个过程,你要耐心独立地去完成它,想清楚你想要的是什么,然后去争取。勇敢一点。


现在可以做的是完善你的申请材料,没有办法改变的事情就想它了。你是XX大学的学生,的确在这一点上没有优势,但是担心这个没有用,你不会因此不申请,也不能临时换学校,不如把时间心思放在有用的地方。材料差不多就寄了,早交没有坏处,然后该干什么干什么,调整心态等offer。”

3.实例分析

大体布局即是如何,至于写些什么,个人根据个人情况调整。一些想对大一大二同学说的话,如果你们学校有申请成功的学长,我的一个建议是把他们的CV拿来看,看什么?看你现在缺什么,知道自己缺什么,你就有时间去规划了,打一场有准备的仗。即便那些不想出国的,也应该如此,看看优秀学长的个人简历,将来不管就业还是考研,都有所准备,而不是等到大四面临毕业时空叹息。

页眉
:申请的program以及季度,春季?秋季?申请ID(如果有的话,没有的话写出生日期)。这些信息都是便于小蜜核对,也防止你的CV遗失出了你的申请Package,小蜜好找回。

大家看到了我在助研那一栏写了翻译一本书中的某一章节,为什么这么写?因为这是一本经典著作,凡是做磁性液体研究的,没有人不知道这本书的,大家应该懂我的意思了吧?

那么我是不是真的助研呢?我的指导老师并没有和我说我是他的助研,但是我自己想想,我给老师做的工作可以说是助研,于是我就自己给自己一个名分,呵呵。当然CV上写的工作是实实在在做了的。

论文等相关信息要准确。我不光指在CV上的要准确,在网上的也要准确。当我在网上搜索我的论文题目时,发现有一篇论文在数据库里作者顺序搞错了,发现之后,马上给数据库机构打了电话,最后改正了过来。我也不清楚怎么会弄错,所以希望大家有论文的把自己的论文再在网上搜一遍,确保信息准确,这样不会带来不必要的麻烦,没准哪个教授想看你的论文,让人上网搜呢?

不管是提交电子版的CV,还是纸质版的,签上自己的名字体现一个人的严谨。签名也意味着你在承诺CV中的信息是准确,没有任何虚假的成分。

实用技巧

、个人陈述、简历以及其他书面材料上都签上自己的大名以及日期,体现一种认真的态度。

、最好在成绩单和推荐信(如果学校要求邮寄纸质的话,)上贴上自己**的小纸条,比如成绩单上就贴“Official Transcript From XXX University For Mr./Ms XXX”,推荐信上就贴“Recommendation Letter for Mr./Ms XXX”,同样体现严谨。

、随申请材料写一个Checklist,根据需要写上自己的相关以及寄送了哪些材料(示例)。

、选择快递服务,首选DHL,性价比还是比较高的。EMS不怎么安全,TNTUPSFedex虽然快捷,但是比较贵。省钱方案:可以先把所有学校的申请材料统一快递给美国的某位同学,然后让他用平信在美国国内分发;有的学校要求寄送两份成绩单,一份寄送给系里,一份寄送给研院,这时为了省钱,可以和研院小蜜或者系里小蜜商量,统一寄送到研院或者系里,然后由某一方代转交给另一方,这些都是可行的。
其他

等你决定去某个学校,要I-20时,如果学校不提供快递或者到了某个特定日期才提供快递服务,这时,你可以让研院把I-20 平信寄给美国的某位同学,然后让他快递给你,这样也比较便捷。
