很多非国内top 7也申到了 NYU/CMU/Stanford

They didn't lower the standards but opened up their minds to lesser known schools where capable applicants could also be found, although in smaller numbers compared to TOP X universities.

但却是感觉好申了， 学校里同等背景的人去年被拒今年都录了

今年一大片CMU/NYU, 我觉得是其他国家的人越来越少了，名额都给我们中国人了

I'm not very clear abt the situation at CMU. As for NYU, most Chinese students graduated from oversea universities, not those in mainland China. Plus, they did enroll students from various backgrounds, but remember approximately half of admitted applicants declined offers.

This is survivorship bias -- admitted students from less renowned institutions attract more attentions.

Fellow students can hardly know each other's background clearly (you may not have the idea how they exaggerated their background, etc.), but the admission committee can.

Not quite sure about this year's situation (Personally I only know one from Shandong U is going to NYU fin math) . But it is definitely not true for past years. Most people were from Chinese universities like ZJU/FDU/NJU. NYU's website used to post their CV/resumes.

These years MFE programs are no longer attractive to American students, as the job market for financial engineering is bad like sh*t, and thus competitions are almost only among Chinese students ourselves. I agree that the number of applications rises this year (which is super irrational in my opinion), but it is not a good indicator for competitiveness, since basically 90% of the applicants are lemons.

One can hardly find a non-asian name on the list, and Chinese names occupy more than two thirds.

If u r looking for Chinese-like names, that's 23 out of 39. I just met this year's ft students at nyu today, those from mainland include PKU, RUC, WHU, SDU. But still the majority are oversea students.
U know me personally?..

那这只能说名校在挑选学生时不再把本科学校作为第一道门槛了而已，那些非TOP X的学生必然有着更强的背景吧。。这并不代表MFE比往年好申啊。。

未必。进了同一个program说明背景都是一样的，不存在非top x的学生背景更强的问题。top 2的教学质量就是好过top 50，这无可置疑。所以非top x的学生可能要付出更多的努力，但这并不能说明他们的背景更强。

哎。。。。

BTW... top 7是啥?难道是学习M7....
我只知道top 2。。。top 4的话已经能出好几种组合方式了
