Not quite sure about this year's situation (Personally I only know one from Shandong U is going to NYU fin math) . But it is definitely not true for past years. Most people were from Chinese universities like ZJU/FDU/NJU. NYU's website used to post their CV/resumes.
These years MFE programs are no longer attractive to American students, as the job market for financial engineering is bad like sh*t, and thus competitions are almost only among Chinese students ourselves. I agree that the number of applications rises this year (which is super irrational in my opinion), but it is not a good indicator for competitiveness, since basically 90% of the applicants are lemons.

One can hardly find a non-asian name on the list, and Chinese names occupy more than two thirds. |
