Graduate student applications are invited for PhD positions in the Atomistic and Multiscale Mechanics Group in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the Iowa State University. Self-motivated students in the area of theoretical, computational and applied mechanics, computational materials science, and condensed matter physics are encouraged to apply. Research topics are broad and cover molecular dynamics simulation, advanced finite element modeling, the development of massively parallelized multiscale computational tool, and its applications in modeling thermal as well as mechanical behaviors, including heat transfer in ceramics and polymers, plasticity and fracture in metallic materials, dislocations and phase transformations in semiconductors.
Individuals with a background in mechanics, materials science and engineering, physics or other related fields with strong interest in materials modeling and simulation are especially welcome to apply. Also, those who have working experience in one or more of the following areas are desired for the positions:
• Continuum Mechanics . ----
• Advanced Finite Element Method (not just using software)
• Molecular Dynamics
• Dislocation Dynamics, Phase Field Modeling, XFEM, Crystal Plasticity, Boltzmann Transport Equation
• Multiscale Modeling of Materials from Atomic to Microscales. ----
• FORTRAN, C++, OpenMPI.google и
• LAMMPS, GULP
