you can always come to ann arbor for a research assistant position without asking for payment. It is easy to get.

Usually the cost will be 1200$ per month.

If you want a Ph.D., I would say it is very hard. Professor will first consider MS students at UMICH who he knows very well.

也就是做完RA之后，也只是只能拿一封推荐信？ 不太可能跟老师读博？？

1. come to US. Use OPT to find a RA. Start from your own grad school

2. Try to find a job. Do not take Ph.d.. Currently I am working at bay area so I would say you get your life a lot better than taking a phd and actually phd is not that useful for your work.

How long can you support yourself? If 1 year, I would say probably will but however, you need to find a rich one.

Then try to find a professor that is famous rather than looking at the grad school reputation. It would be easier to fit your plan.

I think this is pretty long enough for a professor to hire you.

If you are really determined, you could try to contact any professor you want. Just to mention you can do free work and probably use OPT to sustain your status.

I heard some student work for free at Cornell, in mechanical engr.
