Dr. Wei Gao from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville (UTK) is seeking outstanding candidates to fill multiple PhD student positions starting from the Fall 2017 semester. Recruited PhD students will receive full financial support as Graduate Research Assistants (GRAs) during their entire PhD studies.

Dr. Wei Gao is doing pioneering research in the design, analysis, and implementation of wireless networking and mobile computing systems. His research aims to develop efficient wireless network protocols, mobile software systems and hardware modules for various computing platforms and applications, ranging from the existing smartphones and wearable devices to the emerging Virtual Reality and Internet of Things systems. His research, therefore, involves many collaborations with industry partners and creates various opportunities for students’ internships and full-time jobs after graduation. He is a NSF CAREER Award winner and has published more than 50 papers at many top-tier venues of conference and journals. Applicants of all relevant majors including Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Communication Engineering, etc, are encouraged to apply. Applicants with hands-on skills on building practical wireless communication and mobile computing systems (e.g., experiences with building circuits, radios and embedded devices, and programming with Linux and Android OS kernels) will be given prioritized consideration. Applicants with strong background in optimization theory and algorithm design will also be considered. Why pursuing PhD at EECS@UTK? The PhD programs of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at UTK is placed in the top 15% among all the U.S. public universities according to the recently released National Research Council (NRC) ranking. The EECS Department is also featured by its physical proximity and close collaboration with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), which is the major research facility of the US Department of Energy and owns the strongest supercomputer in the world.
