下面给出的AD/WL/REJ等情况，是我觉得具有背景代表性和消息时效性的，而不是每蹦出一个都汇报

比如像Princeton这种情人节基本大家都REJ的情况，我就不给出每个applicant的信息了，大家可以去如QuantNet/thegradcafe等网站check

有的项目在各大论坛有讨论帖，我看到了就会给链接，没看到欢迎大家给补充

最近看到和听到很多童鞋打听“XX program咋样啊？性价比？就业率？”等等。其实要了解一个项目，不一定就只能从forum上和身边一些童鞋的口中得出，你大可以把该项目的所有网页浏览一遍，trust me it won't take long. 虽然是校方自己写的不可能完全objective，但placement data/career service/curriculum/internship periods/seminars/alumni association/online & on-site events等的信息只有学校自己才有最详细最实时的。另外google也可以查到美国媒体对其评价、各种events的新闻等；QuantNet上发帖也可以得到 MFE admission committees/MFE alumni/MFE applicants 的回复，比光在中国人圈内问更effective。希望大家不要仅仅依赖于跑帖子，自己找信息也是种锻炼，而且还可以帮到其他童鞋O(∩_∩)O

他家结束得早，12/1/11的deadline，1/10/12和1/25/12左右各发了一批interview notification

问题比较正常：career progression; current role; goals; interest; macro ques; extra-curricular activities; why Princeton

2/8/12到2/14/12间都有大批AD/REJ发出，目测fall 12的结果已经发完

今年Princeton特别注重工作经验，这可能也会成为今后他家录取的重要标准，以后还想混进去滴筒子，好好在公司摸爬滚打几年吧~

Fresh graduates with high GPA/GRE but no relevant work experience does not really make the cut.
Those with relevant work experience, hence more marketable and employable, got a high probability to get an interview and get admitted.

Looking at the profiles of those getting admitted, they either have worked in finance or have some high level of potential of employ-ability (govt-scholarship with guaranteed job back home, etc).
This is not very surprising if you follow the Princeton program the past few years. They target a segment of the applicant pool that they know will do well when it comes to job placement. Those with previous jobs in finance will more likely to get a higher salary and associate-level positions instead of analyst. This in turn will do wonder for their placement record. And in turn will attract more applicants with these type of profiles.
Data for thoughts.

Every program would wants to admit those they think will have the best chance to compete in the job market. Obviously, they are limited by the capabilities of their applicant pool. If 80-90% of applicant pool is fresh graduates from China/India who never have worked in American corporate before, the programs can only look at things like grades, English skill, internship, etc ...without knowing how they will place on Wall Street.

It is a lot easier to fill a class of 20-30 people out of 700 applicants instead of finding 60-120 high qualified students out of 1000.

It comes down to my essential point that it's a matching process. Know your profile and needs and understand what each program is looking for and providing. Apply to those that match.

Hi all,

I am from China. I moved to the UK for my undergraduate studies and I am currently reading physics at one of the top 2 schools in the UK. I took the GMAT but I only got 690, 5.5. Then, I applied for both Princeton's and MIT's M.Fin Programme.
I got offers from both Princeton and MIT.
I had two finance-related internships and pretty strong extracurricular activities at my school. The admission process is very long. The deadline is 1 December. You need to write a 1000-word Statement of Academic Purpose and submit a GMAT/GRE score and 3 letters of recommendations.

This requires kind of a long-term planning. I took the GMAT in April 2011, then I asked the general manager of the bank in which I worked in the previous summer and two professors at my school to write me a letter of recommendations. I was very busy when my school term started in Oct 2011 because of the university recruiting for major banks in London office. I spent hours and hours talking to bankers and further confirmed my interest in investment banking and private equity. I wrote my statement of academic purposes a week before the deadline. I wrote 950 words only because I do think a concise statement would be better than a rambling 1200-word statement.

The statement should include:
1. Your short and long term career goals.
2. How Princeton's more academic approach would benefit you and help you achieve your goals? (verify this by stating classes that would help you)
3. How can you fit into Princeton's progeamme and culture? ( i.Academically, Princeton is very Quantitative. If you studied Maths, Sciences, Economics or Engineering, that would be a big plus. They are not very interested in business or finance major, since scientist, mathematicians, engineers and economist are generally smarter and better in problem-solving. ii. Socially, how would you fit into the American culture?)

Letter of recommendations:
I would suggest recommenders to adopt the MIT's suggested format. (Princeton doesn't have a suggested format.)
Probably, two of them should be from your academic professors if you are still in university, and one from your previous employers.

GMAT/GRE Scores:
They said they prefer GRE, but they also accept GMAT. They focus more on the quantitative side on your test scores. Your Undergraduate exam results would be valued with your test scores together. I got a high grade in my undergraduates studies but a low GMAT, and they still offer me admission.

Interview:
They interview only the top 100 applicants and the interviews are conducted throughout January. Then, they admit around 30 students. The admission rate is usually less than 5%.
The interview itself is similar to a first round IBD interview with a BB Bank. It is competency-based, and the interviewer is interested in your leadership skills and teamwork, etc. Basically, they want to know if you are capable of getting a job in a BB Bank, a top tier hedge fund, or a private equity firm. They will ask if you are having an internship with any top banks in the summer.
In my opinion, the interview is easy compare with IBD final round interviews, in which you are drilled by technical questions.

Admission Decision:
Results are released in mid-Feb. If you are not admitted, you will have time to prepare for your application to other schools that have a 1 March deadline.
The Programme itself:
The Programme is very academic. It is a flexible programme that you can graduate in either one year or two years. The placement record is 100% since the course was established, because the school has a great alumni network and the relation director is fantastic in contacting top firms with job opportunities. It is definitely the best M.Fin Programme in America.

这个项目是一年半的，开设在applied math全美No.1的Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences下，不适合作为PhD前置课程而是纯就业导向的，如果想在Mathematics这一块深入研究，应该申请的是这家的MS in Mathematics

11毕业的共38人，12毕业的共30人，按照名字数了数，长得像Chinese的有一半左右，不过应该基本不是大陆本

2/12/12发了MFE的interview notification，面试日期为2/16/12左右，all behavioral questions

这批面试据说是on-site in Beijing. 共42 interviewees且似乎均为北清之流的学生，有北大同学说只有北清被面，版友有不同说法，详见此处

几年前应该是没有面试的，去前年有面试了，去年是admit筒子全被面过，面了的几乎都录取了，前年是部分面

今年情况又有变化，说明疙瘩在根据每年学生水准不断调整standards，目前除了北京有面试发出，全球其他地区都没听说有面试

   这也没啥好奇怪的，零几年的时候UCB MFE也有直接录取不面试的先例，现在不面试就没想头了

   大家是不是情人节一大早都收到一封update on your MSFE application的邮件了？昨天一论坛抖出了北京有面试的消息，全球各地的applicants就不淡定了，不淡定就总有人会打电话确认消息，Admission Office大概被打爆了就发封邮件来叫大家不要打了you are slowing down the reviewing process...

一句话，稳到起！人家美国的学生都没收到面试俺们急毛线啊~

   2/16/12又开始发电面，面试时间是2/17/12，有印度的，中国的，美本的童鞋拿到，面试不超过15min，和第一批的on-site又要求不同了

   这礼拜如果有时间来不及call而没发完的，下礼拜发

   2/18/12国内凌晨开始发第三批面试... 面试时间居然是收到信后的50多分钟内截止。有几个可选电话，但说了这周没法打的话下周可以打

   新发的这批面试电话时间又缩短到10min了，据第二批面试筒子消息，今年面试通过率不是1:1而是1:2，std behavioral questions

   因为是2月底出结果，个人认为最多再出一批面试顶天了，应该不会再多了

   2/21/12新一轮面试time slots已发，各位gd lk!

job prospects for any kind of Masters (MFE, MathFin, MSOR) is almost same. Currently it is not good. Employer does not really care about name of your program, he really cares about what u know. And here begins the difference. Suppose you study everything well according program curriculum then from MSOR u have almost NO chances to get a job in a top firm. Why? Because the stuff you studied is not enough (and it not tailored) for finance. So if u are in MSOR u have to study much more - first, your curriculum, second, finance curriculum. General stuff in almost same (probability, simulation, some math). But MSOR curriculum has almost no stochastic calculus and related stuff. So it is your responsibility to study it by yourself. On spring you take almost all courses as MFEs, but it has sense only if u know prereq stuff (stoch calc, finance, programming, etc.). In sum - MSOR is not a worst choice, but definitely it requires you to study much more.

目前所知从国内七大名校背景较好的童鞋到普通重点背景一般的童鞋都有被拒，而且是秒拒。但有背景中下者取得面试资格，该校口味较为奇特

第二批面试在1/14/12

第三批发面了~~时间有1/27/12、2/3/12和2/7/12的~~

1/27/12面的已经有筒子拿到ad了，属于技术面，还没面的蹲家里好好看看自己的CV、PS、essay~

被seriously consider的筒子会被面两轮，第一轮是technical的已经毋庸置疑，第二轮的面经网上资料较少，大家最好把通用的面试问题准备下

没收到interview notification的也不要桑心~~有直接录取的先例

中国2/17/12的凌晨发了第一批的ad/wl，从愿意爆料的筒子来看，都是没有被interviewed的，个人认为被interviewed的应该是属于Admission Committee对你的资质不咋个sure，所以才会打电话来看看你英语能力、academic ability等和CV上是否match。

刚爆出来的人有美国的、加拿大的筒子，有的人也没有work-ex，均非Cornell undergraduate

1000多人申请，口味不挑也不正常了，哈哈，第三学期在Wall Street，配置很好啊

直到四月中旬，Cornell都会陆续分批发ad，don't lose your heart!

2/20/12又发了AD，赶脚好奇怪，不是President's Day么？还工作这么敬业~当天同有WL发出

2/22/12见到第一个Rej，被调剂到OR了，而且还是前面2/6/12参加过面试的，个人认为印证了被面的反而是校方拿不稳要不要下手的applicant

被虐得体无完肤的Cornell MFE 面试 [2012-03-12]

被Victoria面了整整半个小时。开始20分钟各种攻击我说话的每一点。超级严肃超级凶的。。。。狠狠地抓住我的话不断的问why, why ,why. 然后不断push push push!

准备的问题" why cornell, why mfe"...完全派不上用场，只能当场想。后来终于引导到我熟悉的话题。慢慢就顺了。technical part都是一些很简单基本统计和金融概念题我都答上了。

后来就是我问问题的时间了，她又变得非常耐心，不停的给我介绍这项目有多好。讲了10分钟。。。所以面试一共整整半个小时。

然后她说了我英语不够好。。。其实我在我朋友圈里算英语口语不错的，与学校prof也是各种能聊，加上我家GG也是CBC。但是可能没有这样under pressure的情况下说英语吧，又或者Victoria对英语“好”的标准挺高的。

看前辈的经验Victoria特别重视英语，我觉得我可能悲剧了。后来她可能看打击我打击惨了又说我统计学的挺好的。。

寄托上current student写的关于Cornell MFE

首先抱歉这个帖子有点晚,因为今年的MFE在12月1号已经截止申请了...所以对申请明年秋季的师弟师妹们应该帮不上什么, 也就让有准备的人心里多一份底气吧.

后天CFEM的毕业典礼,我们这届FE就要毕业了. 前几天做完degree project presentation以后我们组跟CFEM Director Victoria到墙街旁边的一个小酒馆喝了几杯. 席间聊到了关于这个项目的种种, 我觉得有些东西还是有点用的.

Victoria说我们这届遇到了the second worst time, 而09年是最糟糕的. 我们暑假实习的placement有100%, 而截止现在, 我们这届full-time placement是70%. 去年我们上一届是有史以来最好的, 毕业时的placement是75%, 毕业后3个月是98%. 希望我们还没offer的兄弟姐妹们都能尽快有offer.  不过无论如何, 童鞋们应该都学过统计, 这些百分比就业率在个人上都是没有意义的. 能不能找到工作真的是完全看个人能力, 和当你不是巨牛无比时更重要的, 运气. 我们有像我这样的挫人神马都不会考试靠突击学了两个学期的stochastic还不记得BS Formula不会Ito的拿着offer在手, 也有跟我完全相反的牛人各种作业答案来源编程高手为数不多真的学懂stochastic的还在苦等面试苦等offer. Victoria那天开玩笑说她发现GPA和offer数是成反比的. 虽然不完全正确, 却也无奈地有一点道理.

关于录取的几点,都是Director说的(括号里是我说的). 应该是大家最关心的. (其实我觉得项目适不适合你才应该是你最关心的)

今年收到超过Cornell ORIE一共收到800多份申请,其中MFE concentration超过700份. (先进OR再转FE是行不通的,FE是只出不进的. 不过Cornell OR真的是很给力, 全美排名长年前5, 他们找工作也没我们压力这么大, 很多人去做consulting的早早就有offer在手了,最早的入学一个月就有full time offer了,玩了一年...而且申请压力也没那么大. 有兴趣的童鞋完全可以考虑)

由于申请过多他们审材料又特别仔细,所以今年起不得不把deadline移到12月1号. 因为2月截止实在审不完了.

我问Victoria她审材料和面试的时候最看重一个人的什么,她的回答是maturity. 她最关注的是一个人的personal statement, 里面写了些什么,这个人对FE有多了解,这个人对金融市场有多了解. 她说如果她觉得这个人连options是什么的不知道的话她是肯定不会要的. 在PS里她要看到一个人对自己将要在未来一年半里面对的东西有全面的了解(不是懂,而是知道自己将在与什么东西打交道). 她认为这是很重要的,而且这完全是做得到的,很多东西你没有接触过,但是只要你花时间去research,你一定能找得到这些信息. 比如说你不一定能把BS公式背出来,但至少应该知道这是用来做option pricing的, etc.  (我记得有个网站叫wallstreetoasis什么的挺不错的. 我觉得这不光是你录取的问题,而且你要知道自己想不想做这一行,trader? Quant? Tech? 甚至IBD? Equity Research? MFE并不是每个人最好的选择)

关于成绩单. 当然你GPA不能太低. 她说她会一行一行地看你的成绩单,她会先找英语课. 如果你大学只上过一门英语而且GT都不高, 她是不会要的, 因为她不相信英语不好的人能在这里有好的placement. 接下来才是数学课,她会看你上过多少数学,有多少是相关的. (她本身是Cornell ORIE的PhD毕业,在Soloman和DB做了很多年的fixed-income trader.她对我们需要哪些数学课非常了解的) 总体来说看完成绩单她会知道这个人是不是well prepared for the program. (编程其实不太重要,如果你的志向不是做Tech的话. 学过点编程就好,C++和Matlab能编些小程序, 大的project总是有CS毕业的童鞋们在的~到是数学,学过实分析Real Analysis和测度论Measure Theory会对你学Stochastics上手很有帮助,大多数人第一个学期都完全不知所云的,我现在还是...) 至于推荐信. 她是看得出来是谁写的的. 不过她还是会看就是了.

关于Market, 她提到你一定要follow the market. 她问我中国有WSJ和FT么,我说有啊...她说那就是了,不读market news的学生通通不要, 她觉得that's the least you can do. 我记得面试的时候她也问了我market的新闻, 所以就算你平时不读的,写ps的时候可以写点,面试那几天的新闻一定要找几条背背.

另外我提到我们这届一个印度人都没有,而中国人占了一半以上. 她表示她也很surprise最后是这样,也许中国人的确更适合吧. 不过她觉得以后应该不会全都这样.

大概就是这样. 主要就是在申请的时候面试的时候你要表现出对MFE的理解,表现出自己有自己的思想,而不是因为本科学什么或者MFE是热门而跟风来的. 用她的话来说, 你要能在PS和面试里differentiate你自己. 祝你们成功.

顺便说下此学校的毕业发展情况。众所周知Michigan的location并不算好，但学校的reputation每年还是能招揽来很多大公司招人。不过地方到底还是不太好的，下文是quote某位聊Michigan和UIUC的金工项目出路的老美的话，一家之言仅供参考：

If you are an intnational student , you will have a really difficult time landing job from either of the places. I know couple of michigan grads who are unemployed even an year after their grad even tho they had top GPA's in their MFE.

I suppose the difference between those two programs is getting most of you guys stumbled. The following is info I collected via the internet and some of my personal opinion. Hope to be helpful.

   (1)  There is no formal connection between the two programs, although they cooperate on certain initiatives. MSMF is offered by the Department of Mathematics, in partnership with the Department of Statistics, through the Graduate School-New Brunswick. The MQF program is offered by the Rutgers Business School, at the Newark and New Brunswick/Piscataway campuses. Other differences between the two programs include:

MSMF requires 30 credits and be completed in one year; MQF requires 48 credits and can be completed in two years.
Rates for MSMF tuition and MQF tuition.
MSMF admissions emphasizes mathematics prerequisites, as well as overall student record.
MSMF curriculum emphasizes mathematical finance and stochastic analysis, numerical analysis, computational finance with Matlab & C++, statistics, and allows 2 Business electives.

(2)   Ranking on Advanced Trading

Both programs are mentioned in that ranking. But according to some MSMF students, the MQF was added to the ranking by mistake & ppl @ Advanced Trading did not want to embarrass Rutgers by removing it.

(3)  Though  MQF is not offered by Math Dept, students in that program still have to take courses in Math Dept. Fewer, of course.
