Q & A ..

===攒===R===P===啊=== 10:30 - 11:30 ===攒===R===P===啊===

veronica: Would you start reviewing applications before the deadline?
Kristi Schwindt Ramos: Hi Veronica:  It depends on the academic department in which you are applying.  All students that apply by the published deadline are guaranteed a fair review by the department.

Taras: I had only one chance to take a GRE. However, the Verbal result did not satisfy me. Is there a chance that admission comitte would consider my GRE scores, received after the deadline? Thank You.
Kristi Schwindt Ramos: Hi Taras: .  It is up to the department whether or not they will consider your application with late scores. Please contact the department to see if they will consider your application with late scores: http://gsas.nyu.edu/page/grad.scholarlyprograms.deptsprograms The submission deadline for scores is the application deadline, but we continue to receive and process score reports from ETS as they come in.  It takes about four weeks for the official scores to arrive.

Jiajun Shen: are the applicants under review now? When can we expect to hear from you about the admission result if application was handed in before Jan 2012?
Zoya: Hi Jiajun, yes, the applications are under review right now.  Each department reviews applications at their own time and then communicate decisions to us.  We expect to start getting decisions in February though March.

cmckinney: I'm curious about where most graduate students live, if there's a particular area, or if they're spread out over the island and burroughs?
Politics Student: Hi cmckinny! Yes, most people are pretty spread out across the city. Most studnets choose where they want to live based on the price they want to pay for rent. Prices on Manhattan tend to be higher than in Brookly, Jersey, and Queens. NYU offers help with housing here, and they can answer more questions for you: http://gsas.nyu.edu/page/grad.life.livingnyc

Liyi Dai: Hi, I’m Liyi.Would you please describe the admission process?
Charles Boyle: Hi Liyi, Thanks for your question. That's abig topic but generally speaking all applications are forwarded to the various departments within the Graduate School. Decisions are made my the indivdual admissions committees at the department and Graduate Enrollment Services sends the decision to the applicant. All decisions are sent via e-mail. Please go to the Allication Resource Center for more information -- http://gsas.nyu.edu/page/grad.admissionsapplication.html

Stefanie Kae Dlugosz: Is financial aid, such as assistanships, fellowships, and merit schoarlships available to MA students?
Carmen Diaz: Hi Stefanie,Master's students should contact their program/department to see if financial aid is available.  If you have not already done so, you may want to investigate external funding opportunities.  You may start with NYU's Office of Financial Aid web site http://www.nyu.edu/admissions/financial-aid-and-scholarships.html (there you will find links to scholarship searches and information for international students). You may also want to search for outside sources for funding online.  Students who receive competitive fellowships from external agencies may be eligible to apply for a matching tuition award through the Graduate School's Tuition Incentive Program (TIP). More information on this program can be found at: http://gsas.nyu.edu/page/grad.financialaid.gradfellowships . Richard Squires: If my recommenders send their recommendation forms in after the application deadline, is that okay? Some of my recommenders are very busy. thanks. 1point3acres
Charles Boyle: Hi Ricahrd, It depends how late the letters arrive. If it is just a week or so after thwe application deadline there probably will not be a problem but if  it is longer than that it could be an issue. Some departments will not review "incomplete" applications. Please urge your all your recommenders to send their letters via the on-line application process as soon as possible.

CHEN,Jianqi: I have seen a students from the information systems, I was wondering about how many international students are there in your master program, especially in the master program of information systems?. .и

Michael Bekele: Hi, so what is the easiest and cheapest way to find housing in near the campus? Does the university provide some help or is there some website you can recommend?
Computer Science Student: Hi, Michael.  Being NYU is located in the heart of Greenwich Village, finding an inexpensive place to live near the main "campus" will not be easy.  Most off-campus housing students live either in the outer boroughs, such as Brooklyn, Queens or Jersey City, where it's easier and cheaper to find places to live.  Having said that, the University has an off-campus housing assistance program at http://www.nyu.edu/housing/offcampus.html that has postings on available residences.  Sites such as craigslist also shows the availability of housing in and around NYC.  Hope this helps.
. .и
Melissa Ballesteros: is there some kind of financial aid for the NYU in Madrid spanish program?
Carmen Diaz: Hi Melissa,Master's students should contact their program/department to see if financial aid is available.  If you have not already done so, you may want to investigate external funding opportunities.  You may start with NYU's Office of Financial Aid web site http://www.nyu.edu/admissions/financial-aid-and-scholarships.html (there you will find links to scholarship searches and information for international students). In addition, the University Financial Aid office and the Master’s College offer many helpful resources.http://www.nyu.edu/employees/career-development.html http://www.nyu.edu/admissions/financial-aid-and-scholarships.html

Kelyn Soong: Where do graduate students typically live?
Politics Student: Hi Kelyn Soong. Graduate students live all over the city, including outside of Manhattan in Queens, Brooklyn, and New Jersey. Elyse Rodriguez 2: Is there a forum for potential grad students looking for roommates?
Charles Boyle: Hi Elyse, Thank you for your question. When you apply for housing you are asked for the type of roomate you would prefer in general terms. However, housing for graduate student is very limited and I would recommned that you also explore the possibilities with thr NYU off-campus housing office ---http://www.nyu.edu/life/living-at-nyu/off-campus-living.html. Kevin A. Castellanos: With living in NYC (know as the city that never sleeps) how do graduate students manage to focus on their studies?   What percentage of students work and study?
Computer Science Student: Hi, Kevin.  Time management is the key to any successful endeavor.  It's the responsibility of each individual to make sure their work gets done in whatever program they are in.  However, as you mentioned, there is no lack of opportunities for social, cultural or academic-external activities in NYC, and in the University as well.  Most of the graduate students I know either at least work part time, or are engaged in internships, academic activities, etc.  There are many amazing opportunities here, both in NYU and in NYC.  Take advantage of everything you can, but again, it's up to the individual to focus their attention and do what they need to do to succeed.

Rahul Raghuvanshi: I am applying for the M.A in Magazine writing program. Do I have to get my transcripts attested by the university registrar? . check 1point3acres for more.

Michael Bekele: Hi, do you recommend working next to your studies in nyc? Is it easy to find student jobs in the city in order to get some pocket money?
Computer Science Student: Hi, Michael.  Whether you  decide to work (either part or full time) while you undergo your graduate studies is really up to you.  Many graduate students here do, especially if the work is relevant to their field of study. There's the official work-study program, open departmental positions (such as Teacher's Assistants, etc), and also the Wasserman Center for Career Development, which hosts and posts numerous interview, resume, internship and job positions events throughout the year. Whatever department you are in, there are also opportunities mailing lists where companies and other employers posts positions, many of them local to NYC.

Kimberly: Is graduate housing on campus available? Are there any resources to help students find housing off-campus in NYC?
Carmen Diaz: Hi Kimberly,Living in New York City can be very exciting because of the incredible cultural, scholarly, professional, and social opportunities available. To make the most of the New York City graduate school experience, prospective master’s students are encouraged to consider carefully the wide array of housing options before choosing the offering most suitable to their needs and those of their families. As housing in New York City and its nearby suburbs is expensive and graduate school can demand a significant time commitment, making a decision about where to live may mean weighing several competing considerations.   http://gsas.nyu.edu/page/grad.life.livingnyc GSAS and NYU offer many resources to assist students with this decision, including the Off Campus Housing Office and the NYU Department of Housing. In addition, the GSAS Master’s College can answer questions about NYU graduate student housing for admitted master’s students. http://www.nyu.edu/housing/offcampus.html http://www.nyu.edu/life/living

Alex: I have a question about housing. How many on-campus spaces are available for grad students? If I do not get into residence, is there a neighbourhood you would recommend students to look at for finding an apartment?. 1point 3acres
Charles Boyle: Hi Alex, Thanks for your question. There is on-campus housing available for graduate students but on a very limited basis. The NYU Off-Campus housing office can give you lots of good information about finding an apartment in the city. Here is a link to their website --  http://www.nyu.edu/life/living-at-nyu/off-campus-living.html

Paul Bissember: What percentage of graduate students receive financial aid?  What types of aid do most students receive at NYU?
Carmen Diaz: Hi Paul,Master's students should contact their program/department to see if financial aid is available. For additional information about ways you can finance your graduate education at the Graduate School, please review the PDF document called, “Financing Graduate Education” at http://gsas.nyu.edu/page/grad.financialaid.gradfellowships.

Sidharth Dash: when can i expect a decision about MS Financial Engg application for fall 12 ?
Zoya Iskhakova: Hi Sidharth, he communicating of decisions varies by department. Most doctoral programs make their decisions in February and March. They arrange to have decisions emailed by mid- to late March. Master's and non-degree programs make their decisions at different times, beginning in early March. .

Nithyanand Rao: Can I know when to expect an admissions decision from the journalism school? I've applied to SHERP.

Charles: Hello Computer Science Student. What kind of information do you have to share about possibly working at a job(full or part time ) and being a fulltime student in an MSCS program? Is it too possible?.google  и
Computer Science Student: Hi, Charles.  I actually worked full time in a 9-5 and took three full courses in the MSCS program last semester.  It's definitely doable, but is not the best situation to be in.  Most MSCS courses occur at night (5-6:50pm and 7:10 to 9pm slots), so the course schedule does accomodate daytime jobs a lot.  However, it really comes down to time management and what you will be able to handle..google  и

Ruvimbo: Hello, I am interested in the dual program Masters in International Politics & Business. Just wondering for students leaning more towards careers in business, if this has been a useful addition to their education? Can it supplement an MBA for those intersted in lss of hard core finance and more of an international approach to business and politics intertwined. What have been their career prosepcts or have they been limited to NGO's , goverment jobs, etc. Thanks
Politics Student: Hi Ruvimbo. The politics department and the business school take a very different approach to international business. In the politics department, you will be limited to the numbers of business classes you can take. While yes, being in the IPB program gives you some crossover courses, if you are more interested in the business aspect I would suggest looking at the international business program at Stern. Otherwise, you have some flexibility in the Stern classes you can take, and tailor your studies to what interests you. Career opportunities from our graduates have been varied. You may want to discuss what track within the politics department you wish to follow by contacting someone in the department. The homepage is: http://politics.as.nyu.edu/page/home and here you will find someone who can answer more of your questions.

Jenn: Hello! I am applying for the Masters in Psychology Program. If I have already asked for Letters or Recommendation per hard-copy, is that completely frowned upon opposed to the electronic version. I feel bad asking my recommenders to go back to submit online; please know that I printed and had them fill out the formal form along with their letter before sealing. If this is still applicable should I just send to the P.O. Admissions Box listed?
Charles Boyle: Hi Jenn, We require that all letters of recommendation be sent to us vis the on-line system. Letters received on-line are attached to your on-line application and are avaialble to be viewed by the admission commitee faster than the mail. We, of course, will accept and process letters received in the mail. If the letters are mailed please do use the Post offcie Box 907 address as listed in the Application resource center.

Dinesh Chandramohan: I have applied for MS in computer science for fall 2012. May I know what will be the I20 amount for this year.
Zoya Iskhakova: Hi Dinesh, Please contact Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) for this information. You may email them at intl.students.scholars@nyu.edu

Praveen: @computer science student, what kind of funiding opportunities are availiable? And what about RA and TAs?. .и
Computer Science Student: TA and grader positions are definitely available, but shouldn't be fully relied on, as the positions are competitive and limited.  The department doesn't really offer any regular scholarships or financial support.  Part time jobs are available, on-campus as well as off, such as the work-study program.  It's basically up to the individual student to seek out and find funding options for the MSCS and MSIS programs.

Tanya Duggal: (Masters in Biology- Oral track) I have a pre-committee file from my undegrad that consisted of ~5 letters of recommendation. Can I have my counselor mail that entire file including all my recs to NYU GSAS admissions?
Charles Boyle: Hi Tanya, Thanks for your questions. All letters of rcommendation must be sent to us vis the on-line application system. We will not accept letters sent via a credential service (like Interfolio). Please register your recommenders in your on-line application as soon as possible.

Praveen: What about RA and TA ?.

Mike Bole: During my secondary school and university years, English is the only medium of instruction.  Do I have to take TOEFL for MS Mathematics?  If not required, which item in the online application should I reflect this fact?
Zoya Iskhakova: Hi Mike, you do not need to take TOEFL if the medium language of instructions for your Bachelors degree was English.  You also, do not need indicate it on the application. This decision is made by our office upon review of international credentials. . Χ

Daniella Sánchez Russo: When applying to housing inside the university, what aspects are important?
Charles Boyle: Hi Daniella, Thank you for your question. Housing for graduate students is extremely limited. The application for on-campus housing will be available in April. Because the on-campus housing is so limited I strongly recommend that you work with the NYU Odff-Campus Housing office. They are an excellent resource for inforamtion and listings for housing in NYC. Praveen: Can you tell me the names of the companies that have hired students from MSIS?
Computer Science Student: Hi, Praveen.  There's a large variety of students hired from the MSIS program.  I don't have specific names off the top of my head, but many financial and corporate companies headhunt from the MSIS and MSCS programs, as well as many smaller, local start-ups and such.. 1point3acres.com

Tanya Duggal: Are there any required writing samples for masters in biology with oral bio track ?
Charles Boyle: Hi Tanya, The Biology department does not require a writing sample for any of their programs.

Patrick Huang: Helllo, if my application got decline this year, can i use the same application information fro the next year, such as the letter of recommendation
Zoya Iskhakova: Hi Patrick, all application materials for last year have been purged.  You must resubmit everything.

Patrick Huang: Hello, i am wondering between mscs and msis, which one is more popular at NYU
Computer Science Student: Hi, Patrick.  "Popular" is really up to you.  MSCS is more for the general computer science field that want to become more proficient programmers and computer scientists.  MSIS is more toward large scale information systems practitioners, and are generally for those that have actually worked in the IT or IS field for a bit and are tailored more toward the professional IT/IS track.

Roni Jacobson: I live in Georgia and would need to relocate to NY if accepted.  How long does it usually take the off-campus housing department to help students find an apartment?
Politics Student: Hi Roni. If you are looking for off campus housing, you are going to be doing the hunting yourself. The off campus housing office offers suggestions as to available apartments around the city here:  http://gsas.nyu.edu/page/grad.life.livingnyc and will be able to answer questions for you.  Otherwise many students also use Craigslist and other apartment advertisements. As far as time, it can vary depending on when you arrive in the city. Some times of year are more difficult than others, and some students can take up to a month to find appropriate housing.

Alex: I was wondering about financial aid opportunities for MA students, particularly in Irish Studies, i.e. are MA students are typically offered jobs as teaching assistants (TAs)?  Are there entrance scholarships?
Carmen Diaz: Hi Alex,Master's students should contact their program/department to see if financial aid is available. You can also speak to the department about teaching assistant opportunity. You can contact the Irish and Irish American Studies Department by telephone at 212-998-3950 or by email at gsas.irishstudies.ma@nyu.edu and a department representative will respond to your inquiry. Tejas Dikshit: What are the possible internship opportunities available? Is it advisable to do a part-time or full-time Internship?
Computer Science Student: There are numerous internship opportunities posted in the CS/IS departmental mailing lists all the time, both in large companies and small.  Whether to do part time or full time is really up to you, and the balance you want to take between your academic work load and your internship/job work load.. ----

Instead the scanned copy of the Provisional Certificate has been attached that clearly indicates that I have Passed my under graduate program. Do I need to mail a true copy of my under grad degree?
Carmen Diaz: Hi Rahul,When you apply online, one (1) official academic transcript, mark sheet, or final grades sheet (and English translation, if required) from each institution you attended should be uploaded on one of the “Transcript Upload” pages as part of your online application. We recognize that not all applicants have the opportunity to prepare an electronic file to upload to the application. Your application will receive full consideration as long as you mail us your transcripts by the application deadline date. However, please note that our preference is for you to upload the transcripts, if at all possible. Thank you.

Jenn: Re-Posted  (Psychology Master's) How long do you generally like our personal statement to be? I've noticed different school's prefer different lengths. Thank You!
Kristi Schwindt Ramos: Dear Jenn~Your personal statement describes past and present work as it relates to your intended field of study, educational objectives, career plans, and reasons for choosing your field. The statement should be concisely written and not exceed one to two double-spaced pages.. check 1point3acres for more.

Mike Bole: If accepted, when is the best time to find off-campus accommodation or when the supply is most abundant?
Politics Student: Hi Mike. Typically leases start at the beginning of every month. So for example, if you want to movie in Sept 1, start looking in early August. To be warned, in NYC this is when the most people are also looking for apartments, so competition can be high. But this also means that the most places will be available since 1yr leases are the most common. The off campus housing office will be a great resource to check out: http://gsas.nyu.edu/page/grad.life.livingnyc but you may also need to look elsewhere in your search. .--

Rahul: @Carmen Diaz. This is wrt to my query about mailing my degree certificate to the univ. I have already attached one copy of my Transcript and All my mark sheets in the online appilcation. I hope this would suffice and the need to mail a true copy of my degree certificate is not necessary.

Kartik Gupta: Hi I have applied for MSIS course, will the online application page have any "Track your Application" Link by which we can look at the current status of our application.. 1point3acres.com
Zoya Iskhakova: Hi Kartik, SMTS will show that we have your application and the material that we received from you by mail.  it will state the status oft the application.

Renheng Bo: Hi, i am applying for the Masters in physics. I want to know that when i graduate will you provide the oppptunity for me to go further for the Ph.D in NYU
Kristi Schwindt Ramos: Dear Renheng~Admission into the MS is no guarantee that you will be accepted to the PhD.  I would recommend consulting with the Physics Department about your goals: http://physics.as.nyu.edu/page/graduate

Patrick Huang: Zoya, i am applying for mscs program, and i have been worked for 5 years, i am wondering if i cannt get a recommendation from my undergraduate instructor, how would that effect my applications
Charles Boyle: Hi Patrick, I can help you with your question. Since you you've been out of school working in your filed already I would advise you to ask a supervisor or employer to write a letter of recomnendation. However, we would still prefer to receive one letter from an instructor in the institution you last attended who would be familiar with your studies and interests.

Dinesh Chandramohan: How much time does the university take to process the I20 after it has received the financial documents of an admitted student. thank you !

Tejas Dikshit: If i get an admit from NYU but if my visa is rejected and hence cannot attend for the desired semester then can i postpone it to the next semester?? Thanks. ----
Zoya Iskhakova: Hi Tejas, Deferral of admission is possible in some circumstances  - such as yours.  However, you will need to get approval from the department.

Tejas Dikshit: Housing in Newyork is really costly so are there any grants available for international students for the same to make it more affordable?
Carmen Diaz: Hi Tejas,Please visit the NYU Office of Financial Aid at http://www.nyu.edu/admissions/financial-aid-and-scholarships.html for information about any scholarships or grants available for international students. Thank you.

Praveen: Hey Hi.Iam from India.Iam doing my bachelors in engineering. My language of instruction is english.I wanted to confirm that i do not have to send my TOEFL score. I do have ther required 105 marks in that exam
Kristi Schwindt Ramos: Dear Praveen~The TOEFL requirement is waived if your baccalaureate or master’s degree was (or will be) completed at an institution where the language of instruction is English. You do not need to do anything to inform us that you are eligible for the TOEFL waiver; we can determine this fact from your application materials.

Rahul: @Computer Science Student: I am more inclined towards doing research post grad. Is the MSCS program designed for students with such aspirations?. ----
Computer Science Student: Hi, Rahul.  If you plan on doing research, the PhD program is better for you.  There are some research opportunities in the MSCS program, but the program is more for a field practitioner, than research.  If you do well enough in the core and general courses, you can apply to do Master's research and do a thesis instead of taking a capstone course, and can continue in research after completing the Master's.  But again, the PhD is a better option for research.. Sketch Turner: The campuses are spread over the city, how easy is it to get around?
Politics Student: Hi Sketch. In NYC be prepared to do a lot of walking. Otherwise the subway and busses are main forms of transportation for most students. Otherwise bikes work well too. But overall, this city is easy to navigate.

Tanya Duggal: @ Charles Boyles, So as Jenn asked, I have the same concern about my letters of recommendation. It hard to get in touch with all the professors and have them to upload the recommendations online. Can I stll send it via mail?
Charles Boyle: Hi Tanya, We will accept letters sent to us by mail though it does slow down the process both here in graduate Enrollment Services and at the department where the final descisons are made. I would recommend that you try to have your letters sent via the on-line system. If all or some of them are going to be mailed then please be sure print out the Document Cover Sheet and include these with the letters. Please us the Post Offcie Box 907 address listed in the Appication Resource Center.

Zoya Iskhakova: Hi Roni, Since the deadline for the application was January 4th, the department is required to give you the same consideration as other students who applied earlier. I do not believe, this will affect decision on your application.
. Waral dи,
Patrick Huang: Hi Charles, thanks for your answer, so in my situation, 2 letter of recommendations from my previous employer is sufficient enought, right? ..
Charles Boyle: Hi Patrick, It would be better if you could get a third letter but only if if would be a strong recommendation.

Computer Science Student: Hi, Rahul.  There is no official placement program through the school once you graduate.  However, there are plenty of school resources students can use to find a position, whether during or after completion of the degree.  There's the Wasserman Center for Career Development, that will help in resume writing and interviewing, as well as hosting career and recruitment fairs.  There are also departmental mailing lists for opportunities and connections, if you come to the school.

Tejas Dikshit: So if my visa is rejected does my admission to the University still hold for the next semester???Thanks
