Getting the Job You Want - from 1point3acres.com
How to get the job you want? A lot of people consider it as a truly hard and complex question. As a freshman on the job markets with zero working experience, I used to be one of them. However, after eleven-month real-world practices, I suddenly realized that the answer is actually quite short, just “be match”.
When people are talking about “match”, there should be two parties at least. In the case of job hunting, two sides would be you and those available positions on the market. Please allow me to make a simply assumption here that you are one job seeker, like me, who has no actual power to influent the number of availed openings in any particular company. In this case, the most controllable part through the whole job hunting process will be we. We couldn’t force the company to create a position for you. So we’d better to adjust ourselves to find a good fit.
Nowadays, the competition on the job market is more intense than it’s ever been before. Thousands of students graduate from colleges with shining bachelors, masters or PHD degrees. You might blame your failure on all those massive layoff news, continuous high unemployment rate and bleak economic environment. However, at the same time, another piece of news has been continuous mentioned for a long time: HR is still having a truly hard time to hire proper candidates. The responsibility of a HR just likes that of a matchmaker. They fail because either you don’t show the qualifications required by this position, or you don’t think this position is suitable for you. All those interviews are designed to make sure that the company has enough time to evaluate your experience and interests. Meanwhile, you would have opportunities to convince them that you perfectly match to the target position. All about “match”.
Collect Information
You might ask how come you will know the evaluation criteria for a specific position. This is the most popular question, I believe, on every job fair. HR is pleasure to answer it, but the problem is everyone will get the same answer, which is not as clear as you want. So here are some of my tips:
- Info-session. The reason that companies go to different places to hold these events is to let you know their businesses, culture, and most importantly, the recruiting information and the skill sets they are looking for. Another good thing about info-session is that it offers you an opportunity to build the connection with companies. The managers or other employees welcome questions. In some cases, HR will give some preference for the people who show up during info-session. Why? Because your attendance proves your interest and the willing of joining them. I am a strongly believer of info-session, because 8 out of 10 of the interviews I got, I went to the info-session as well.
- Collect information from current/ former employees of the target company. You could ask help from the staff in the career service to get the related contact information. Normally, your alumni would like to answer your questions and tell you their experience with the company. Depends on the closeness of your relationship, the information might be various. Sometimes, you are able to get some valuable information through this way, such as the common personality in that team and specific skill sets for that position etc., if your alumni or friends have that and want to share with you.
- Networking. You would never know the utility of attending networking events, especially in the short term. In some case, some of the attendees might have recruiting tasks in hand. Generally, networking will give you the chance to better understand companies and build the relationship with their current employees. Through these conversations, you will have a clearer picture about their working styles, job responsibilities, and project experiences, all of which would definitely distinguish yourself from other candidates during the interview. At least, you could use these stories to raise your recruiters’ interests, because those stories are part of their day-to-day work or used to be. Additionally, you could collect contact information and keep in touch with them. This would require your professional follow up.
Hope you can get some useful information using the methods above. After you go through the information collection phase, the next step will be to how to leverage it to better show your qualification on the resume.
