Research Assistant Position
Research Assistant Positions in High Performance Computing Tools (HPCTools) group in Computer Science Department. .и
A research assistant position is available in the High Performance Computing Tools (HPCTools) group under the supervision of Dr. Barbara Chapman. The successful applicants, who must be currently enrolled in the M.Sc./Ph.D. program in Computer Science at UH, will join our team and carry out research and development in support of our on-going projects. These cover a range of activities related to the design, implementation and uptake of programming models for current and emerging computer systems. The positions offer an excellent opportunity for students to engage in cutting edge research and do work that will contribute to their thesis requirements. Our group also provides extensive training in practical aspects of software development and parallel computing.
Our overarching goal is to make it easier for application developers to exploit new hardware, and to enable the highest levels of program performance on a broad range of emerging computers. We therefore expect a strong interest in computer systems, excellent research skills and a desire to perform research that leads to innovation in system software. The following areas of expertise are all directly relevant to our work: programming languages and compilers, program development environments, runtime software, parallel and distributed applications, multithreading systems, embedded systems. Useful skills include: C/C++ programming experience, familiarity with the Linux Operating Environment, the Fortran language, MPI expertise, and knowledge of modern computer architectures.
The High Performance Computing Tools (HPCTools) group at the University of Houston is engaged in leading-edge research into programming models for a variety of emerging architectures, including multicore and manycore platforms, embedded systems, and petascale supercomputers. We work closely with the semiconductor industry, collaborate with individual companies and play a leading role in the development of industry standards in this area. We also collaborate with High Performance Computing experts at major universities, large national laboratories, including NASA and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and industry, and provide our near-commercial-strength OpenUH compiler to the community for free download. We continue to work to raise the level of programmer productivity and to enhance application performance. More information on our team and project work can be found at: http://www.cs.uh.edu/~hpctools.
Please submit your application materials, including a list of courses taken, electronically to Dr. Barbara Chapman (chapman@cs.uh.edu). You should include your resume, a description of relevant experience and courses taken, a statement of research interests, and the expected date of graduation. Preference will be given to applicants who intend to complete a Ph.D. in Computer Science at UH.
