ME Professional Master’s Program TOP 15 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q1: Is PMP a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Management) course or not?
. •       A: Yes, the PMP is a Mechanical Engineering degree program.  However, students in this program will take some courses in engineering management to help prepare them for careers in industry.  Graduates of this program will receive the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) degree.

Q2: Does PMP require any previous work experience?
•       A: No, you are not required to have any previous work experience.

Q3: Does this offer mean that I have been denied admission to the 2-Year MSME non-thesis or the 2-Year MSME thesis or any other MSME program that I originally applied to?
•       A: Unfortunately, admissions for the other non-thesis MSME program and the thesis MSME program are now complete for Fall 2019.  The Mechanical Engineering Professional Master’s program may be an option for you because the graduates of this program still receive an MSME degree.  Of course, you need to be capable of the faster pace as well as the financial self-support inherent to this program.

Q4: Will there be any phrases or information on the degree saying that this is a Professional Master’s program?
•       A: The degree is still an MSME and the professional aspect means the student received additional training in leadership and organizational management that the transcript will show.

Q5: Am I able to continue for a PhD study?
•       A: The Professional Master’s program is geared more towards industry, however, you can apply for any degree including the PhD, if you meet the program requirements.

Q6: What other differences between the two degrees seem prevalent?
•       A: The Mechanical Engineering Professional Master's program is a non-thesis Mechanical Engineering Master’s program. Graduates of this program will receive a MSME degree. The ME Professional Master's program will allow you to further develop technical specialties, as well as build professional and managerial skills as a Mechanical Engineer.

Q7: How long it will take for the Admissions Committee to review my application for PMP?•       A: The Admissions Committee has already found you qualified for the PMP option.  Once you communicate your interest, you will receive an official decision letter from the graduate school.Q8: Can I wait until I get a decision from the initial application, and then reply to accept to PMP?
•       A: Unfortunately, the School of Mechanical Engineering admissions committee have concluded their recommendations for admissions for our MSME thesis and MSME non-thesis programs for Fall 2019.  You were not offered these options but are being offered the PMP option.

Q9: Do I need to complete a new application form to apply for PMP?
•       A: No, your application that you had originally submitted has been reviewed and is adequate.  You only need to communicate your decision regarding applying for PMP.

Q10: Is it possible for me to be considered for both programs?
•       A: At this point, we are only considering students for the ME Professional Master’s program for Fall 2019.

Q11: Is it possible for me as an international student, to take the course part-time (i.e. take longer than 1 year) if I wish to do that?
•       A: If you choose to take fewer course while legally maintaining full-time international graduate student status, the program can span longer than a year.

Q12: If the PMP does not have Purdue funding options, do students self-fund for this program?
•       A: Yes the students must be self-funded.  Purdue funding is not available for the Professional Master’s program.

Q13: May I transfer from the professional masters’ option to a thesis masters option
•       A: No, transfers are not allowed into the thesis option.  However, you may apply for appropriate other degrees, after completing the PMP degree.

Q14: Can I do research with my advisor in the PMP program
•       A: Students are allowed up to 6 credit hours of independent studies classes that may include research projects, typically in summer.

Q15: Does the PMP have a BS/MS option?
•       A: The PMP does not have the BS/MS option, since it is already a one-year program.
