Applications are invited for full PhD scholarships (starting in spring 2020 or fall 2020) sponsored by Dr. Kun Xie’s research team under the umbrella of Transportation Research Institute (http://www.tri-odu.org ) at Old Dominion University (ODU), Norfolk, USA. Dr. Xie recently joined ODU as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. His research concentrates on the use of data-driven methods and emerging technologies to enhance the safety, resilience, and efficiency of transportation systems. Dr. Xie has been recognized by prestigious research awards such as IEEE ITSS Best Dissertation Award, CUTC Milton Pikarsky Award and TRB Best Paper Award.
The admitted Ph.D. students should be able to conduct research independently as well as in an interdisciplinary team across multiple departments. The potential research topics include, but not limited to safety analytics using large-scale driving data, Bayesian spatiotemporal modelling, connected and autonomous vehicles for crash prevention, machine learning with applications in transportation, causal inference for evaluation of safety treatments, and data-centric emergency management. The admitted Ph.D. students are expected to take courses related to statistics, machine learning, high performance computing, optimization, programming and visualization.
Desired Qualifications
• A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Transportation Engineering, Statistics, Machine Learning, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Operations Research, Psychology, Geographic Information Systems or a related field
• Skills in data processing and programming (e.g., Python, R, Matlab, C/C++, Java)
• Experience in academic writing
