NEU CE PhD 面经，求大米！

刚刚完成了第一个面试，聊了1小时7分钟。非常顺利。多亏了地里的面经啊！

第一个面试：
上来最好自己主动自我介绍一下，不管他问没问。这样可以拉近与老师的距离。我自我介绍就三句话。我的名字，我的本科/master在那里读的  和 我的专业，我现在在申请XX学校（老师所在学校）的PhD。
介绍完后，老师就开始简单介绍一下他想要提供给你的信息。然后他就开始问我面试问题了。
1. 为什么读PhD？
这道题真的是标准的问题啊。看地里的面经大部分都是这个开头。标准答案必须得是你内在的因素。比如你对computer engineering 和 researching 的喜爱。最好能有科研经验来back it up。只要让老师感觉到你有做introspection，那么你就回答对了。
2. 读完PhD之后想干什么？
这道题挺简单的。我就说了因为PhD 特别的久。5 年左右。但是我猜测要么就是stay in academia 或者 industry 做 research。如果你已经想做 academia 了，那也可以直接说想做academia，但是有可能老师会问为啥。
3. 你的greatest strength and weakness 是啥。
这个strength 必须得说perseverance 和 determination 了，因为PhD 老师最看重这个。不过你得有理由来back it up。比如GPA或者你的一个非常难的project/class，然后你努力克服了。这个weakness 可以随便了。我说我自己too shy，causing stutter in presentation and interviews。4. 你现在PhD program 里收获到什么？你对PhD program，老师的expectation 是什么？
这个我就说了对PhD program expectation 是能够让自己独立思考，并且能够实施独立思考出的idea。而本科毕业后去工作却无法做到独立思考，而是给人当码农。对于老师的expectation是，希望老师能够push，并且对学生关心一点。这样才能让我开始和老师communicate more effectively。这个回答可能不是特别的好，但是也是勉强过了。大家觉得最好的答案是啥？
5. 你为什么Gap one semester/year？你在Gap的时候多做了什么？
lz本来想先出去earn some industry experience, 然后再回来读grad，但 lz因为无良公司导致刚毕业就没工作了。。所以我就直接回来读grad了。然后我说因为没准备to apply graduate  school，所以GRE 没有 准备，school 定位也没做。所以Gap这个半年都在毕业搬家，GRE 准备，还有做grad school 定位。
6. 你为什么选了你当前的这个本科/Master学校？
我觉得这问题比较偏。一般老师不会问。我就说我喜欢Computer engineering，而本科/Master学校是我当时知道的最好的学校了，所以。。

然后教授就开始讲他的work，还有告诉我Phd的experience是什么样的。

最后让我问了些问题。下面是我总结的问题列表（可能有几个问题有overlap answer，所以选几个问）：
If the professor didn’t tell me what he is working on, ask: “What project are you working on? What project will I be working on? ”

How many students do you have? Ask if his website is out of date。

Do you help students organize a 4- or 5-years plan? Do you do an annual review to assess the student according to the plan?

How do you prepare or train your students for a Phd degree? What is the requirement for graduation? In other words, what kind of skill or characteristics do you want to see in your graduating student?

. ΧDo you have weekly paper reading assignments and have a required number of publications by the end of each year?

How long in average does your Phd students take to graduate?

What is it like to join your lab? Is the lab culture cooperative or competitive?

Is the project direction open for discussion or it’s a unilateral decision?


Will the funding be in the form of RA or TA? Are 4 years of funding guaranteed?

Are you open to letting your student go out for coop or internship during the summer?

Will you go on sabbatical soon?

When will I hear back from you regarding to the decision?

问完什么时候可以拿到decision 后 老师就开始问我有多大可能会来。如果他今晚就给我发offer你会不会立刻接。我就说这是我的第一个面试，所以我想看看我的options。然后他说可以，并问我能不能告诉他我其他的interview是在哪个学校。告诉他学校后，他说offer是7天expire，然后我说enough 后就说Have nice day结束了。

我接下来在NEU还有第二个面试，到时候就会补充面试问题。也欢迎大家补充。好吧，就这样，祝大家好运+offer 多多。

刚刚面了第二个面试。因为这个面试是我本科导师内推所以老师没有问什么behavioral的问题。一上来就给了offer。我就问老师上面我总结的问题列表。我觉得这个老师挺不错的，而且project也对口，是关于FPGA machine ...

读Phd是因为可以提升自我修养，能够让自己独立思考并且实施。选了CS/CE专业是因为从小有兴趣。有趣的research topic？embedded system，machine learning，cyber-physical security和 robotics。

可以挂钩的。比如我套磁的cyber-physical security老师，我email里就提到TA写的一篇paper是关于effect of adversarial attack on DNN applications。随着越来越多的物联网application 出现，cyber-physical security越来越重要了。

哇，你也是做HPC的啊。我刚刚面试的老师就是做HPC的。看到你那帖子回复感觉这个HPC offer要凉凉啊。

后来接了什么项目啊？我准备接第二个老师的FPGA accelerated machine learning。
