Prof. Emrah Akyol at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of SUNY-Binghamton University is looking for Ph.D. students to join his research group starting in summer 2020 or fall 2020 (note that Binghamton University has rolling admission policy, so there is no strict application deadline). Students will have opportunities to participate in cutting-edge research in networked systems, multi-agent systems, UAVs, cyber-physical-human systems in general. The research is supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation and SUNY.

Binghamton University (BU) is a leading research university in US. For instance, in 2019, the prestigious Nobel Prize in Chemistry is awarded to Binghamton faculty Stanley Whittingham for his work on lithium-ion batteries, see  https://discovere.binghamton.edu/news/nobel-7548.html for more information on this prize and more broadly https://discovere.binghamton.edu for more information on research at BU. Binghamton students enjoy vibrant college-town living with convenient access to New York City, Syracuse and Ithaca.

Prof. Akyol’s research explores theoretical problems in communications, controls and networks using tools from game theory, information theory, and machine learning, as well as their applications in cyber-physical-human systems and autonomous systems in general. For more information about Prof. Akyol's research, please visit his website at http://ws.binghamton.edu/akyol/

Prof. Akyol’s most recent Ph.D. student, Yanbing Mao, graduated in Fall 2019 and joined University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign(UIUC) as a postdoctoral researcher, currently working on control of UAVs and connected smart vehicles in a group of global leaders in this area. Prof. Akyol has active collaborations with several faculty at UIUC, USC, UCSB, UC Riverside and Cornell.

Prospective students are expected to have strong academic background, are self-motivated and goal-oriented, and can take initiative in executing research visions. Experience in mathematical modeling, and/or research will be a plus. Students will be supported financially in various forms, such as Fellowship, Graduate Research Assistantship, or Graduate Teaching Assistantship. Particularly, there is an immediate opening in an NSF funded project on the intersection of game theory, communications and machine learning.

If you are interested in joining Prof. Akyol’s group, please contact him immediately at eakyol@binghamton.edu and share with him your background (including, but not limited to, resume and transcript).  Prof. Akyol will email you to schedule a Skype interview if there is a good match between you and his group.
