Note: If a sword or knife has lost its edge, it is blunt.

【throw against a wall and see if it sticks】

（1）expression

An old method of testing spaghetti was to throw a strand against the refrigerator, and if it stuck, it was ready to take out of the boiling water.
This metaphor original meant as a test to see if something was done or ready or validated. However, over the years, it has morphed to mean a test to see which solution might work. Instead of "throw it against the wall," one typically hears "throw them against the wall."

（2）verb - transitive

to present an idea and test the reaction.

—We're running out of time to achieve profitability. We've come up with a lot of ideas. Now it's time to throw everything against the wall and hope something will stick.

34.【a pain in the ass】

(1)        AMERICAN, INFORMAL, VERY RUDE
If someone or something is a pain in the ass, they are very annoying.
—These people were an almighty pain in the ass to deal with.

(2)        The words bum and backside can be used instead of arse and the word butt can be used instead of ass. （`Arse', `ass', `backside', `bum' and `butt' are all informal words for `bottom'.）

—When I was bored, I was a pain in the bum.
—All this airport security's a pain in the butt.

35.【have an/(one's) ear to the ground】注意ear是单数

(1) To listen for any indication of what is happening or will happen.
—A: "I'm not sure what's going to happen with this merger, so I have an ear to the ground." B: "Please let me know if you hear anything."
—I know Kim has her ear to the ground in case word gets out about the promotion.

(2) have (or keep) an ear to the ground be well informed about events and trends.
—The idea behind this phrase is that by putting your ear against the ground you would be able to hear approaching footsteps.
—She knew she'd succeed as a reporter if she kept her ear to the ground.
—Jane keeps her ear pretty close to the ground and can usually tell you what the mood of the staff is.

36.【turn someone on】

—to excite or interest someone. Fast music with a good beat turns me on.
—That stuff doesn't turn on anyone.

37.【run something past someone】

If you run an idea or a document past someone, you tell them about it or show it to them to get their opinion about it. To casually explain something to someone; to inform someone about something.

-I have an idea I'd like to run past you.
-OK, run the plan past me one more time.
-I'll take these papers home and read them, and I'll want to run them past our lawyer.
