Position(s) Description
The Transportation Research Group at Old Dominion University is accepting multiple Ph.D. applicants. Old Dominion University (ODU) is a public research university with an enrollment of over 24,000 in Norfolk, Virginia. The students are expected to work with Dr. Hong Yang in the Department of Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering (CMSE) at ODU and have extensive opportunities to closely work with faculty in the Transportation Research Institute (TRI) and others. The positions are available as early as Fall 2020 / Spring 2021. Applicants from different disciplines are encouraged to apply. We are highly interested in those with strong background and interest in Transportation Engineering, Computer Science/Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Urban Informatics, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, etc.

The students are expected to be able to work both independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team within and beyond the CMSE Department. The program in the CMSE Department offers great opportunities for students to develop their capabilities and skills in computer science, data science, and computational modeling & simulation. Sample research projects conducted by the Transportation Research Group include Big Data Analytics in Transportation, Spatial Data Modeling and Analysis, GIS Applications, Internet of Things (IoT) for transportation operations, Artificial Intelligence for Incident Detection, Data-Driven Safety Risk Evaluation for Micromobility Systems, Virtual/Augmented Reality (VR/AR) Applications in Transportation, etc. Students are welcome to discuss their research ideas and plan. Admitted students will receive full financial support (scholarship) that covers tuition and competitive stipend.
