The Office of International Services has received information that, effective immediately, Customs and Border Protection officers will now be required to verify the SEVIS status of all F-1 and J-1 international students and scholars seeking entry to the United States. Presently, front line inspectors at the port of entry can not directly access information in the SEVIS system to verify status. Only officials in secondary inspection have the ability to access SEVIS records to verify status. This means that all entering F-1 and J-1 visa holders will be referred to secondary inspection until CBP obtains the ability to access and review SEVIS records in the primary sites of inspection.
As a result, The Office of International Services advises all F-1 and J-1 visa holders that are traveling to plan for delays at the port of entry when entering the United States. Extra time should be budgeted to complete port of entry procedures and/or make connecting flights.
We will continue to update you as information develops.
