How important are TOEFL scores to foreign students?

Very important, but only because we have nothing better. Your goal before admission should be to learn English, not to pass the TOEFL.

Yale University attaches a great deal of importance to the process by which graduate students learn to become teachers. Every student is required to TA two terms, and may TA more terms if desired. Being an instructor or assisting one requires interactions with undergraduate students. Yale administers its own test (the "SPEAK Test") to students after they get here to be sure they know English well enough to talk to undergraduates. Failure to pass this test causes administrative problems for faculty and graduate students. The test is waived for students with a 4-year degree from an institution where English is the primary language of instruction; and for students who score 26 or higher on the spoken portion of the iBT test.


What if, due to circumstances beyond my control, I simply can't include a required piece of information? (We are especially often asked about the GRE Computer Science Subject Test, which seems to be offered on dates that make it hard for our applicants to plan.)

If a piece of information is missing, we will make do without it. We will still see your application, and may well still admit you. In particular, we have often admitted students without subject-test scores. You will have to decide for yourself whether a missing piece of information weakens your case substantially.

Note: The wording of this paragraph caused an amazing drop in the number of students taking the CS Subject GRE. In fact, almost no one took it. Some students skipped it for financial reasons, but most must have reasoned that it could only hurt them, which is very puzzling. Every student must take the infernal Analytical Writing test, whose score is difficult to interpret and tends to be low for Computer Science applicants. (Because the top tiers are packed with all the people applying to graduate school in History and Comparative Literature.) Some people were undoubtedly rejected because they scored low in Analytical Writing, when they might have been accepted if they had turned in a good CS Subject score.


What financial support is available for me?

The Computer Science Department is committed to supporting Ph.D. students for five years, including summers, by combinations of grants, university fellowships, and teaching Assistantships. The support package for a student depends mainly on how much grant money his or her advisor has.

There is no financial support for Masters Students, although the opportunity to TA is available occasionally, depending on the number of Ph.D. students who are available.




Individual faculty members get many inquiries asking if they will be accepting new students during the next admissions season. As you should be able to infer from the previous paragraph, these inquiries are misguided; students are admitted to the department, not to the research group of a particular faculty member.




The terminal Master’s Program of graduate study is normally completed in one year, but may be spread over as long as four years. To qualify for the Master of Science degree, the student must pass eight courses at the 500-level or above. These must satisfy the same "general constraints" as for Ph.D. students (see section 3.1.2.). An average grade of at least HIGH PASS is required, with at least one grade of HONORS.

Q. If I indicate that I might have some funding to support my studies, will this decrease my chances of being offered support from NYU-Poly?
A. The answer may depend on the type of funding you already have. If you have an outside scholarship (say, a US or foreign government or private scholarship) or a commitment by a company to support you over several years, then we would expect you to use this funding if admitted. If you show personal and family funds as your source of support, then we would assume that you would still prefer getting support from us, and that you would not be happy to entirely support yourself from those funds over the several years of your PhD study. In that case, chances are that you would be considered the same as applicants requiring support. In some case, when we do not have enough funding to support all strong applicants, we may offer admission without support in the first year, with the expectation that the department will make an effort to find support in the second year if the student maintains a strong record in the first year.

My country does not use your standard for GPA, how can I convert it to receive fair consideration by the faculty?

A. If your country uses a percentage system please convert that score for the GPA. To convert your percentage score to a GPA using this formula:

4 x <your percent score> / 85 = GPA

It is still better to put in the percentage than leave the GPA blank.

I would like to get a TA position, how do I go about getting that?

A. Sorry, but all the TA positions are filled by our Ph.D. students. All of our Ph.D. students are required to teach three classes to receive their degree.
