US drugmaker Pfizer and German biotechnology company BioNTech said they started late-stage human trials of a potential coronavirus vaccine on Monday. The two companies also announced that the trial will be conducted in 120 locations around the world, including as many as 30,000 participants between the ages of 18 and 85. If successful, they expect to submit a final regulatory review as early as October. Currently, pharmaceutical companies are racing to win regulatory approval before the end of the year.

The CEO of biotech company BioNTech also stated that the company's primary goal is to bring a well-tolerated and highly effective vaccine to the market as soon as possible, and will continue to evaluate other vaccine candidates. The company’s experimental vaccine uses messenger ribonucleic acid, or mRNA molecules, to trigger an immune response to fight the virus. Scientists hope that mRNA can be used to train the immune system to recognize and eliminate viruses.  source
