General Description
The department of Computer Science and Engineering at University of Nebraska Lincoln is seeking highly motivated PhD students and postdoctoral candidate to conduct large scale data analysis and software development for bioinformatics and omics integration in Dr. Qiuming Yao's lab. Our Computer Scientist software engineering program is recently ranked 21 by Intelligent.com in the country. The overall Computer Science department graduate program is ranked stably between 50-70 in different years and in different media. Our lab is part of the new interdisciplinary School of Computing.
The university is located in Lincoln, the capital city of U.S. state Nebraska. Dr. Yao's lab is conducting broad bioinformatic areas reflecting the cutting edge development of the high throughput computing, machine learning, genetic engineering and multi-omics integration. Our lab information is available here: https://cse.unl.edu/~qyao/
(1) Postdoc research associate in bioinformatics
This specific position in Dr. Yao's lab is available immediately and will be contracted initially for two years. The computer science department will provide our postdocs with very competitive salaries much more than standard NIH compensation. The postdoctoral scholar is expected to lead the development of novel bioinformatic algorithms and integrate multiple types of high throughput biological omics data from the lab and collaborators. The focused application area will be but not limited to the modeling of microbiome ecology and human genetics. The postdoctoral scholar also has good opportunity to join collaborations with renowned domain scientists.
Candidates with the following desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
Possession of PhD degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biostatistics, Mathematics or other related quantitative areas.
Experience with scientific software development under Linux and Mac OS environments. Familiarity with common programming and scripting languages such as C/C++, Python, and R.
A trackable record of writing scientific papers.
Experience with teamwork and group communication.
Experience with self-guided learning in a quickly evolving technical environment.
Additional preferred but not required experimental skills include: Machine learning; Full stack web site technology; Biotechnology of sequencing for omics; Molecular cell biology and genetics; Microbiology and ecology.

【中文留言】对导师来说,博士后岗位招人过程其实更加简单,希望踊跃联系。但版上更关注博士招生,所以多说几句。博士申请人即使没有亮点,至少不能有硬伤。好消息是,2022春季计算机系申请可以免除GRE,托福要求虽然较高(大于100,或者雅思7,曾有美国学位可免除),但近期由于疫情全部可用duolingo english test 代替(便宜快速又方便),如遇政策变化请咨询研究生院。先修课不一定完全一模一样,但要有。我们是科研R1的旗舰州立学校,层次居中,和其他同类学校一样,申请人往往都会有一些(不论什么方向的)科研经历甚至论文、助教或帮助上课培训的经历,和申请美国top学校的申请者相比,只是各种经历,或多或少、质量或高或低而已。觉得自己完全缺失这部分内容的朋友先申请硕士班也是极好的选择。
我们的科研当然不能说世界顶级,但也都是前沿课题能出好成果,而且能有送您去顶级继续深造的能力。我们对科研超级热情努力,但不支持内*。
生活方面简单富足,可以让自己专心学习和科研,千金难买家人的放心,全城区域多年来都比较安定祥和、一年多来疫情较弱,奖学金/(成本支出)= 高。
