柏克利副教授(associate)的平均工资（１２个月）是８.６万。
San Jose 警察平均工资１１万。 柏克利警察平均工资查不到， 但湾区各地差别很小。
警察平均福利 >> 教授平均福利。
高中毕业成为assistant 教授平均要约八年时间。此时警察已经有五六年工龄了。
终于成为Full教授时, 警察已经要退休， 干第二职业了。

                            GM Workers make more than professors
The average workers' salary in GM and Ford are higher than professors too.
The real question is, does any professor want to switch job to a cop or automaker for higher salary? I bet none.
In many places, high school teachers make much more than professors. I've seen high school teachers give up higher salary to get PhD and become less-paid professors, not other way around.
Is there anything wrong. I guess not.

                            My friend works at Berkeley's business school. She is an assistant professor and her salary is 155,000 plus another 2/9 of summer research support. Faculty in medical and law schools are paid about the same. Engineering pays somewhat lower, but still comfortably above 100,000. Science and Arts pay lowest.
When you talk about police officers, you also need to distinguish regular patrol officer and detectives. I didn't verify with Department of Labor, but I doubt any patrol officer gets paid more than 60,000. Detectives may get to 80,000, but not very easily.
