Dr. Jiasi Shen (http://shenjiasi.com/) is an incoming Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Dr. Shen is looking for PhD and MPhil students commencing in Fall 2023 to conduct research in programming languages and software engineering. Students will be fully funded with competitive salaries (https://cse.hkust.edu.hk/pg/admissions/).
Potential research directions include:

• Program analysis and transformation techniques for re-engineering software across various programming languages and platforms.
• Automated software development tools for enhancing developer productivity and software quality such as performance, security, and robustness.
• Applying PL/SE techniques to more domains of computation such as machine learning, user interfaces, system software, and computations on emerging hardware platforms.
• Other ideas the students come up with.
  

The applicants are expected to have solid skills in programming and/or math. Prior research experience in PL/SE is beneficial but not required.
Strong PhD applicants are encouraged to email Dr. Shen by November 6 (sjs [at] cse [dot] ust [dot] hk) and submit the full application to HKUST by December 1 (https://prog-crs.hkust.edu.hk/pgprog/2023-24/mphil-phd-cse) to be considered for the prestigious HKPFS (https://fytgs.hkust.edu.hk/hkpfs). Later applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the positions are filled.
HKUST was ranked #3 in the Young University Rankings 2022 and #26 in the World University Rankings 2022 for Computer Science by Times Higher Education. The language of instruction is English.
Dr. Shen obtained a bachelor's degree from Peking University and master's and PhD degrees from MIT, and will be joining HKUST in January 2023.
