PhD Student Openings in Advanced Manufacturing
Dr. Yang Cao from Montana State University is seeking two PhD students to do research in advanced manufacturing. The positions are fully funded (tuition waiver and $2000/month stipend). The expected start date is Fall 2023.
Research Directions
• Advanced manufacturing: additive manufacturing, micro/nano manufacturing
• Electronics fabrication: flexible electronics, soft sensors, actuators, and robotics
• Digital manufacturing: computer integrated manufacturing, machine learning in manufacturing
About the University and Department
Montana State University (MSU) is the highest ranked university in the state of Montana. MSU is classified as “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity” in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department is the largest department at MSU with $6 million in total annual research expenditures.
Required Qualifications
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering or closely related fields by Fall 2023
• GPA: 3.0/4.0 or higher
• Language: TOEFL 80, IELTS 6.5 or higher (GRE is not required)
Preferred Qualifications
• Be passionate about doing research in advanced manufacturing, self-motivated
• Master’s degree in a related field
• Research experience in additive manufacturing/microfabrication
• Strong programming skills
• Excellent communication and writing skills in English

About the PI
Yang Cao is an Assistant Professor in the Mechanical & Industrial Engineering Department at Montana State University. He received his Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering from North Carolina State University in 2020, M.S. degree in Mechatronic Engineering from Chongqing University in 2016, and B.S. degree in Mechanical Design and Manufacturing Automation from Wuhan University of Technology in 2013. His research focuses on high-resolution additive manufacturing and micro/nano manufacturing. He is particularly interested in applying these manufacturing techniques to fabricate innovative devices, such as flexible electronics, wearable sensors, soft actuators and robotics.
