Description:
The Hu lab in the Department of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences at Western University, Canada has multiple fully funded MSc/PhD positions in statistics. The successful candidates will be co-supervised with Dr. Wenqing He in the department. Western University ranks within the top 10 research-intensive universities in Canada and top 200 in the world (The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023). Dr. Hu is a Canada Research Chair in Computational Approaches to Health Research and has excellent experience in mentoring trainees at different levels. Many of his trainees have received international and national awards, accepted into top graduate schools (like Oxford, Cambridge, UCLA, CMU, Toronto, UBC, McGill), employed in high-tech companies (like Google, Microsoft, Amazon), and landed tenure-track professor position with nomination for Canada Research Chair.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate is expected to join an interdisciplinary team to develop innovative statistical methods, especially the new frameworks to integrate statistical modeling and deep learning algorithms to analyze multimodal data in one or two of the four areas: medical imaging analysis, genomic data integration, single cell RNA-seq and spatial transcriptomics, and drug design and discovery.
Qualifications:
1). A minimum BSc degree in (bio)statistics. For candidates with only BSc degree but want to apply for PhD program, they can be transferred into PhD program in the end of first year and all the courses taken in the first year will be counted as a part of the PhD program.
2). Solid math and statistical backgrounds and familiar with different deep learning architectures.
3). have solid programming skills (R, Python and/or C, etc.), and acquaintance with Linux.
4). GPA>80%.
5). Strong written and communication skills.
6). meet one of the following English test requirement:
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): 250, computer based; internet based test (iBT) 90, with no individual score lower than 22; International English Language Testing Service (IELTS): 6.5 out of 9;
