Drs. Yanguang Zhou and Qiye Zheng @HKUST are looking for one Ph.D. student with a research focus on “carriers’ dynamics using time-domain density functional theory (TDDFT)” and related areas of ultrafast optical experiment. Candidates with a strong background in physics or materials sciences, and experience in first-principles calculations are encouraged and welcome to apply. If you are interested, please contact Drs. Advancing a fundamental understanding of electron transport, ultrafast dynamics and lightmatter interactions in materials is not only critical for exploring new physics but also important for designing new materials such as thermoelectrics and superconductors. This project is mainly focusing on investigating the electrons in materials with near-atomic length scale and femtosecond time resolutions, to provide microscopic insight into the transport of electrons, their spin, and their coupling to atomic vibrations and defects in materials numerically or experimentally.
Dr. Yanguang Zhou currently is an assistant professor in MAE department at HKUST. His firstauthor or corresponding-author research has been published in Nature Communications, Nano Letters, The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters and Physical Review B. Dr. Zhou is an expert in materials computation, and has developed several novel algorithms based on C++ for dealing the thermal transport at nanoscale, e.g., time domain direct decomposed method (TDDDM), frequency domain direct decomposed method (FDDDM), Green-Kubo equilibrium atomic and spin dynamics (GKEASD) and so on. Dr. Qiye Zheng received his B.S. in Physics at Peking University and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Before joining HKUST in 2022, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at UC Berkeley where he developed novel ultrafast laser-based pump-probe techniques and high-throughput optical thermal metrologies for materials characterization. As an expert in ultrafast light-matter interaction, Prof. Zheng’s research interest is focused on understanding fundamental transport phenomena and new materials for applications in energy, electronics, and thermal management. He has published 27 papers with 1st or corresponding author papers in journals such as Science (1st author), Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, Nano Letter, Applied Physics Review, Advanced Functional Material, Applied Energy, etc with >1400 SCI citations and an h-index of 15.
