**The Role of Government, Science Research** . Some people argue that government restrictions on scientific research create unnecessary bureaucratic red tape, which interferes with scientists' ability to successfully carry out their work. Some fields have been so plagued by government restrictions that scientists often decide to bring their skills elsewhere, and innovation is stifled. While these are valid concerns, some government restrictions on scientific research are needed. History has taught us that if left unchecked, new technologies can destroy as many lives as they save. Thus, government restrictions that exist purely for bureaucratic reasons should be lifted, whereas those that were put in place in order to prevent new technologies from wreaking havoc on society should not. Medical marijuana and stem cell research are two examples of fields in which government restrictions have done more harm than good, while the proliferation of genetically modified foods is an instance where society could have profited from more government regulation. . According to the Food and Drug Administration, medical marijuana is classified as a Schedule I substance, meaning that it is said to have no health benefits. This classification has been contradicted by hundreds of studies, which have found that marijuana-based medications are efficacious in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, glaucoma, epilepsy, cancer, and a variety of other conditions. I have been blind since birth, but marijuana allowed me to see for the first time. Despite the momentous nature of this discovery, the researchers who I have contacted have been largely uninterested because obtaining government approval to conduct a medical marijuana study is a long and arduous process. If the government were more willing to waive some of these restrictions, my discovery would most likely benefit thousands of other blind people. In addition, other citizens who have made similar discoveries would feel free to step forward because they would not fear ridicule or prosecution. Of course, some restrictions should still remain, such as those that are designed to ensure that marijuana-based drugs are safe and have few long-term side effects. . Stem cell research, particularly embryonic stem cell research, is another field that has been hampered by government regulations. Some of these regulations are the result of religious ideologies claiming that destroying an embryo is akin to destroying the life of a newborn baby. Since our country is a secular nation, and since eggs are clearly not sentient, our politicians’ religious beliefs should not be used to justify restrictions on stem cell research. Furthermore, some stem cell treatments have been associated with the growth of tumors, and such studies have provided fodder for government officials to argue for the suspension of stem cell research. However, this sort of black-and-white thinking is rarely useful. Rather than stopping stem cell research altogether, government agencies should collaborate with scientists in order to understand the circumstances under which risk of cancer is greatest and to design new protocols to minimize this risk. . In contrast to the previous examples, research on the genetic modification of food has been allowed to run rampant. Corporations are able to produce more colorful vegetables and larger animals than ever before. Consequences of eating genetically modified food include an increased cancer risk and precocious puberty. Thus far, the federal government has done little to address this problem, and legislation on the labeling of genetically modified foods varies from state to state. After scientists developed genetic engineering technologies, the government should have intervened to restrict the circumstances under which these technologies can be used. . From the above examples, it is apparent that some government regulation of scientific research is inevitable, but that officials should also be willing to revise these regulations if necessary. Scientific research is a rapidly changing landscape, and government officials should always be kept informed of the latest trends. All too often, the relationship between politicians and scientists is adversarial, despite the fact that collaboration benefits everyone. The American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a well-renowned center for policy research, is an institution that embodies this sort of collaboration; it would be prudent for other organizations to follow suit. . . .
