1. Parasitology: Dr. Qian (Vivian) Liu’s laboratory at the Institute of Parasitology at McGill University is recruiting a graduate student to work on virus transmission and super-resolution microscopy.

Dr. Liu’s laboratory is interested in understanding the entry and assembly of emerging paramyxovirus and coronavirus in host cells and the cells’ defense against these fundamental processes during virus infection. The lab has built a single-molecule imaging platform that resolves virus-host interaction complex at 10 nm resolution on a millisecond scale. Projects in the lab focus on mapping the spatial and temporal organizations and dynamics of the virus-host interactions using super-resolution microscopy and single-virus imaging. Successful applicants are expected to enroll in the graduate program at McGill University starting in 2024 Fall.  

Applicants must have a strong motivation in interdisciplinary research. Research experience in molecular virology, cell biology, and immunology is required. Expertise in mathematical modeling and computer programming is appreciated but not required. Applicants must show proficiency in English writing and speaking. 2. food science: Dr. Xiaonan Lu's lab at Department of Food Science and Agricultural Chemistry at McGill is lookingfor highly motivated graduate students to work on food safety and food synthetic biology.Dr. Lu is lan & Jayne Munro Chair in Food Safety and the Director of McGill's Food Safety and OualityProgram. He is the editor of Trends in Food Science & Technology, and the recipient of Young Scientist Awarcfrom Agricultural & Food Chemistry Division, American Chemical Society (2021), Samuel Cate PrescottAward from Institute of Food Technologists (2021), Larry Beuchat Young Researcher Award form InternationaAssociation for Food Protection (2017), and Young Scientist Excellence Award, International Union of FoodScience and Technology (2015).

His lab has interest in developing innovative and rapid sensing, instrumentation systems and detectionmethods for ensuring food safety as well as preventing food bioterrorism and fraud. His lab also appliesmolecular biology and genomic approaches to investigate stress response and pathogenesis of microorganismsthat pose threats to agri-food systems and public health. Recently, his lab has started food synthetic biology andcellular agriculture that allow for the production of food with higher and tailored nutritional value, food withlonger shelf life and devoid of harmful ingredients (e.g. allergens). Successful candidates will work on projects(1) analytical chemistry in food safety; (2) molecular food microbiology and microbial ecology; (3) foodsynthetic biology and cellular agriculture; (4) intelligent food safety: application of artificial intelligence, bigdata, and internet of things to improve safety of future food chain.

Applicants should hold a BSc. or M.Sc. degree in food science, microbiology, analytical chemistrygenetics, molecular biology, or other related fields by the time of the appointment starts. Experience andknowledge in computer programming are highly appreciated. Applicants must show proficiency in Englishwriting and speaking.
