Glad to hear you’re applying to Ph.D. programs and considering CMU — it’s an awesome place! 

Your areas of interest certainly fit in the HCI department here. There are also literally hundreds of other collaborators in the School of Computer Science (of which HCI is just one department) to further amplify your intellectual growth.  

I should note, unlike some other universities, CMU professors do not accept students directly. Instead, you apply to the department, which admits students. Once accepted, the department will fly you out (expenses paid), so that you can meet all of the faculty and discuss ideas and figure out if there is mutual interest. That is when we would have a chance to speak. All other information about the PhD program can be found on the departmental website.

我给cmu的一个fresh 教授也发过套磁信，他也是让我申请。但是我从网上查的资料cmu是强professor的，所以我也以为被养鱼了。
however，我觉得你这个教授还挺有诚意的，给你写了这么一大段回复。
