Columbia:
Cons:
Pros:. check 1point3acres for more.
UCI:
> 1, How many years do students usually need to complete their study?. 1point 3 acres
The requirements for the program are that the student complete 8 4-credit courses, chosen together with an advisor (usually me) and that they pass a pair of qualifying exams. Details can be found at.google и http://www.bu.edu/stat/graduate-program-information/information/
A full-time student is registered for 3 or 4 courses per semester. So with a four-course load the 8 MA courses can be taken in 1 year. Qualifying exams are offered in April of each year. So it is possible to do the MA in just one year, depending on the level of preparation of the student and on the course load that they are able to handle. Otherwise, students often do the program in 2 years on a part-time basis (i.e., 2 courses per semester). Often students that have not had probability find it difficult to do the program in just one year. But since you have had probability theory already, that should not be an issue for you.
> 2, Is a thesis option available to MA in statistics?
We do not have a thesis required as part of the MA requirements. However, the thesis in most places is simply a summary of research experience, and the faculty here are happy to to work on research with students. If you have an interest in doing research while here, in addition to your coursework, I can help you connect with faculty members in areas of interest to you and you can discuss with them the possibility of doing research.
> 3, Could you please provide some placement information of MA graduates, especially on job market?
We do not keep a formal list of recent placements. But in recent years examples of places where our MA students have worked immediately after their degree include Genzyme (a large biotech in the Boston area), ESPN (a student that was interested in the analysis of professional and college basketball teams), and Liberty Mutual (a large US insurance firm). Some of our MA students also go on to PhD programs in statistics at other universities. Last year one student went to Berkeley and this year another student will be going to either Columbia or Princeton.
